new choke and throttle cables.

thought id post this here as well, just incase somebody reads this thats not following my 1057 thread.

i need to get some new cables for my 1057. heard all the bad rap about the throttle cable twist problem. has anybody bought any new ones recently and had any luck? stens? toro? or some other brand.....

the tractors not going to get worked hard but i would like them to last. i read where some have pinned the knob and had luck with that. kelly, i think i read you did that with your daughters 857. hows that holding up? if i need to pin them before use i will, not really interested in wasting money on something thats not up to par though.

ive replacer newer tractors cables with toro ones and the knobs fall off of all them,,but they are probally different than the ones you need

I JB welded my daughters knob on the throttle, it has had very little to no use after that, I just this weekend removed and threw as far as I could the new thottle cable out of the round hood I redid last winter, I installed a used orig. 40+ year old cable and it works like new including the locking part, I did have to cut it to fit the 8hp, but no big deal, I'm very disapointed in all the new cables I've bought in the last 2 years, even the choke cable on the round hood is stiff and very hard to move, I need to pull the wire out and dry lube it.

thanks for the info there don and kelly.

i guess from what youve dealt with with those cables kelly, which are the same style as what i need, im going to have to look for something similar new or find some old ones. im not about to pay what they are asking for these things and deal with junk. will look into some industrial stuff and see what i can find. or i maybe will be lucky and come across some used ones. the ones on the 875 are still good, just no lock anymore on the throttle. im sure they are too short though because of the frame length. i need to find some long frame ones.

been there done that nothing like having a new cable and the 3rd pull and you have the knob in your hand!kelly my daughter didnt even attempt to look for the knob after i threw it after all this was the 2nd cable i put on that did this,

one thought that keeps coming up has anybody ever returned one and complained. if enough people complained about the poor workmanship, wouldnt you think that the manufacturer would do something about it?. or do the manufacturers even care? are we talking about toro cables as well as stens? it just sucks that somebody can make a crap product that cant function as well as a 40 year old part or even last through a few operations. just thinking aloud here and i really appreciate all the input.

my second one was a replacement for the first thats what pssd me off.that was a stens.finally found a NOS cable works perfect :woohoo:

I put a new cable on the ranger when I swapped the motor, original cable was too short. I got it off evilbay, no clue as to brand. It works good, knob never pulled off, but almost feels like it's twisting. Problem I have is the locking part. I'll pull the cable out to where I want it to run, then twist to lock. It will stay like that for a little bit, then I can hear the motor slowing down. After a bit I have to hold it out to keep the R's up.

:USA: :wh: Martin I guess I will go against the grain here. I believe to try and keep it original especially if the lettering is still there on the 57series or later. I use a roll of shrink tubing about 1/4" line it up like it was before you took it off. keep the white lettering on the engine side. and find your self a motorcycle cable luber I use this all the time on my cables. it pushes the fluid thru the hole cable to the front. as long as the cable is not badly kinked it will be l fine. This one has it on 10577005.jpg Just cut any sharp edges of the original casing. hope this helps. Gary B......... oh can send pick of luber if needed.

I guess I didn't mention the reason for new cables or good restorable used ones is that the ones on the tractor were no good. The choke one is cheap aftermarket and the throttle one was broke at the dash. Both not usable in my opinion. Good idea on the cable lube though.

I'm almost convinced that I will end up going the toro route and deal with it. At least I should be able to take the cable back to the local dealer if it craps out. Never had much success with returning something on eBay.

Maybe some good used ones will turn up, maybe pigs will fly.....

Martin i got mine new one's at glenn's supplus in shelby,ohio , they have the locking throttle cable with the T on the nob and they have the matching choke cable they are just like the toro ones for half the price & they have the locking nut on them ! I hope this can help you & iam sure you can find them on the internet ! :)

I have been looking on the e-net for along time and found nothing. The new ones an ebay lasted about 4 uses and the knob just twists, I now use a pliers. if there is is good replacement out there it sure would be great to know.

heres a question for the ones who have twisted off their knobs............... :scratchead:

how much does the inner cable itself extend up into the knob? is there room to pin it with a small spring lock pin?

Martin I have a 1075 with the orig/ cable. i guess it came loose buy the p/o. what they did is driled and put a small bolt locking nut to hold. It still works fine. I did buy a set off of E-Bay for the 1257 ok so far about 2 yeats now. T/Care Gary B................................

maybe the answer is just to pin them (throttle at least) from the get go. that way the pin stops the movement from starting in the first place. i dont think i would use a bolt, i would want it to be as small and out of sight as possible. maybe even make the pin just slightly smaller than the width of the knob in that area and cover the holes with black silicon to disguise it. i guess i will just have to see how it works out.

drill and pin the knob from the side through the end of the part of the inner cable that is inside the knob. sort of like how the steering wheels on some of our horses are.

mine pulled apart inside were the cable spins in the stem of the part the knob goes on so it will lock.the inner cable dont twist the knob stem does .it has a dimple to hold it together. :snooty:

clyde, i guess i meant the stem. the stem is just an extension of the inner cable. im thinking thats where all you guys are finding the weakness in these things. the metal stem that is part of the inner cable is breaking loose from the knob, correct?

Correct, Martin, but I'm having issues also with the cheap material they are using is rusting bad and the alum corroding, I should have taken it apart and lubed the liner and waxed the rest to help this, my choke cable seizes up after setting awhile.
