Forest Road 594 #3 Posted February 5, 2012 Looks good from here. What's the asking price? Here in North Jersey $400 - 700. good luck
COMMANDO1 23 #4 Posted February 5, 2012 asking 375, but when i spoke to him on the phone i told him i would not give asking price. he said he is reasonable and would do 300 if i took it right away
Sparky-(Admin) 21,332 #5 Posted February 5, 2012 If its a runner, the deck is good and the plow is decent even $375 is a great deal in my book. Good luck! Mike........

TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #10 Posted February 5, 2012 Looks good & decent price. If you end up with it, check the thrust bearing behind the engine pulley at the first convenient opportunity. Don't be afraid to keep the oil changed in that Briggs either.
4xfourfun 30 #11 Posted February 5, 2012 As long as there are no major issues that is a really fair price. Just saw a similiar work horse sell for $300 with only a deck.
COMMANDO1 23 #12 Posted February 5, 2012 what should i look for on the thrust bearing
squonk 41,155 #13 Posted February 5, 2012 I just flipped one of those. It wasn't as nice as that one. It had a heavily patched deck, a good working snowblower and some big JD iron weights. Motor burned oil and rran like crap. Guy wanted $400 and I got it for 3. Sold the weights for $125, the blower for $150 and was left with a smokie tractor with a worn out deck. Put it on CL for $250 and guy came and didn't even quibble. It wa gone just like that.
AMC RULES 37,130 #14 Posted February 5, 2012 Looks like a good deal to me, where's it located? LOL

TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #18 Posted February 5, 2012 what should i look for on the thrust bearing The B&S engine used on this tractor has what are called "plain" bearings on the crankshaft - which means that the crankshaft turns in the aluminum bores of the crankcase & cover. (on a film of oil, of course) The side load of the engaged PTO is counteracted by a ball bearing mounted directly into the back of the drive pulley. There is also a steel plate installed on the face of the crankcase cover for the bearing to ride against. If the steel plate is worn or the thrust bearing is bad, the crankshaft will be forced into the the flywheel side of the crankcase and can cause damage up to & including crankshaft seizure in the block. There's a service bulletin floating around somewhere showing the proper procedure to preload the thrust bearing. The procedure is actually simple and requires the crankshaft to be pulled & held outward while the drive pulley / bearing is pushed in tightly against the steel plate and the set screws in the pulley are tightened. RCTruckDaddy 8 #19 Posted February 5, 2012 I picked up a GT1142 this last summer for $225. It's the one I'm using to plow snow with. Starts easy. No problems.

COMMANDO1 23 #21 Posted February 5, 2012 UPDATE...just picked it up bad news. needs throtle cable, looks as though all wires are loose and wont stay running unless choke is on fuel leaking from carb, smokes but i dont know if it is because running on choke told him i did not want it. there also was another tractor there...no namer with a good running 12 briggs. i needed another motor so i baught it. was asking 225.00 payed 100.00 then he asked me how much i would pay for the horse....i told him i did not want to insult him,but it was only worth 100.00 to me, he said take it. way i look at it, blade in great shape 150.00..deck in great shape 150.00-200.00 mule drive 50.00 rear tires 50.00. then to the scrap yard. here is a question for you guys,,,will that 8 speed rear end fit on my 72 commando 8? zieg72 209 #22 Posted February 5, 2012 Let me know if you want to sell the bare tractor if you don't take the rear out of it.
Rollerman 290 #23 Posted February 5, 2012 The 8 speed will bolt on, but you'll have to do some minor fab work to make the brake linkage work, possibly trim some sheet metal for the hi/lo shifter & you'll have to locate a pulley for the trans. I've used the stamped/cast pullies that can be bought at farm or hardware stores....there a little thicker & you'll have to shim the bely guard out a little. I'm a horrible fabrcator & I've done it to two tractors so far (Lawn Ranger & a 1055/Mutt). Personally I'd repair the throttle cable, clean the carb & repair the wireing....it looks like a pretty nice tractor in the above pics. I''d think it be worth repairing & keeping it intact. Sparky-(Admin) 21,332 #25 Posted February 5, 2012 Or toss the Briggs and get a Kohler for it. I'm lovin the one I picked up. Spent a couple hours on it today pushing dirt, leaves, sticks etc... Mike...........
