RedMaine 1 #1 Posted February 4, 2012 Ok, now that I got my grading question answered, I am hoping that the 416-8 is in good shape. I am looking for what to check on the machine when I go look at it. The seller has owned it for 10 years. He doesnt know the hrs. He said the key will not turn it off and he uses the choke to stop it. The lights don't work. Beyond that the picture I saw was not good enough to determine condition. Do the hr meters fail? Do they all have them? Is there any critical issue to check on this model? What should I operate when I check it out? It has a Kohler. And what the the right price? Or better, what is the fair price for a good machine? It's under 1000, but don't know the condition, and if the seller is negotiable. I am looking at it this afternoon, so any feedback quickly is appreciated! Kelly 1,029 #2 Posted February 4, 2012 As for the not shutting off with the key, is it a K series or a Magnum? I'm going to guess a Mag. with that issue could be as simple as a bad ign. switch, or a broken wire, if it's a Mag. K series don't normally have that problem. Not all tractors have hour meters and yes the fail, in fact tractors I've had here more did not work than did work, start and drive the tractor for a few min. the meter will move if working. Being a 8 speed I don't know of any critical issues, just check it over for abuse, things not greased, oil black, general cond. was it cared for, ect...... As for price that is hard to say, with out any attachments depending on cond. running driving $300 to $700 if very nice with no issues, attachments add value but only as to how nice they are, if he is asking near $1000 it better be nice, not perfect but nice ready to use. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Forest Road 594 #3 Posted February 4, 2012 If it's a kohler single 16 I'd be more concerned if it didn't run. Kelly is spot on! Does it blow any smoke when its running? As for the trans wet seals are normal. Check the trans oil level. See if the trans oil is black or brown and either watery or foamy in appearance. Anything other than black brings down the price. Make sure it shifts smoothly into all gears. No shift on the fly here. You must be stopped to change gears. It's not uncommon to have to let the clutch out some to get it to engage in any gear or go from hi to low range. However it should not feel like you need to force it. I think you stated in another post that it had a deck and plow. A clean 42 or 48 deck goes $200 - 500 down here. Attachments usually fetch more than the tractors. leeave96 487 #4 Posted February 4, 2012 Don't know if I'm to late to this discussion, but I think the Kohler cast iron engines are great! Super easy to work-on and trouble shoot. Parts are abundant too. Use whatever is wrong with the tractor to drive the price down. You will like the 8 speed tractor and it will give you an interesting mind battle going forward - do I like the 8 speed better than the hydro 5xi and the the reverse of it - LOL. If you get the tractor, find yourself a 48 inch deck for summer chores and you will be surprised at how well it cuts too. I get a golf course quality cut with mine. boatman 3 #5 Posted February 5, 2012 Hi there, if in fact it has the magnum engine, it is not getting a ground when key is shutting down. The key switch actually closes the circuit and grounds it to shut eng down. On k series it feeds 12v to coil and opens the circuit to shut down. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Hydro 131 #6 Posted February 6, 2012 My 416-8 hour meter is a time clock which I can hear ticking when the ignition is turned on. Not hard given the age for something like that to need repair as Kelly says. Lots of people including those on this site have a great deal of respect for that Kohler 16 and they are not usually that expensive to rebuild.
