c105 ammeter bounce.

::Just thought i'd update everyone on my ammeter bounce fault.

Went into garage straight after tea tonight to recheck all my wiring and connections etc. Bunged some juice in to tank and fired it up. The ammeter was bouncin all over the place as before. I decided to disconnect the rectifier to check the ac output but didnt need to go any further as it carried on bouncing about with no stator connected. I then pulled the wires off the ammeter and it still bounced about. Looks like a faulty ammmeter.

never known a faulty one before, you learn summat knew every day.

thanks to everyone who offered their help. Going on ebay now to look for new one. Cheers. :woohoo:

Ps. heres a pic of the offending article nearing completion, just rear fender to paint and seat gubbins to sort out. gonna start on snow plough then. the front mounting is already in place ready for test fitting.

only a suggestion... why don't you 'borrow' your Raider 10 one or my GT14? though that looks tough to remove...

look even better in a month or so when the decals are on ;)

gonna try it at weekend. cant be bothered yet. pretty obvious its the ammeter at fault though. wobbles about like a big wobbly thing with nothing connected.

'might' have the one from my Raider by then - though no idea where it ended up, but worth a try... or you could swap for voltmeter which would tell you a lot more ?

...and yes I'm still at work ! :banghead:

or you could swap for voltmeter which would tell you a lot more ?

True .... if you are adept at interpreting voltage readings as they relate to different states of battery condition. Many folks I have talked to regarding "high" voltage readings have interpreted the issue to be a voltage regulator gone bad when infact the root cause of the high voltage on the meter was either one of two things,

a highly sulfated battery with very little charge capacity

or

a voltmeter that isn't easy to intepret or reads incorrectly.

This one shows a 14.0 volt indication when in fact the battery would be nearly overcharging at a true 14,6 volt reading.

Visually, the gauge gives the impression you have "a whole green bar yet before overcharge is a danger".

If you let the charge progress to the top of the green indications - you are really stressing the battery with a 15.7 charge voltage.

At a 16 volt gauge indication, the actual voltage was over 1 volt off.

This is the 3rd "Toro" style meter I have experienced displaying a readiing which does not correlate well to the meter scale. I have not yet tested any 300 - 400 series style meters.

Agree, analogue meters lack the necessary calibration - even if they are accurate, what does the end user interpret the reading as??

In this case we know the battery is almost new - and as a precaution we had already checked the charge circuit and regulation. As full rpm we hit around 14.2V on the meter so safe enough for us to know for the moment our charge circuit is working correctly!

      Looking to find a new home for my 84 (I think) C-145. It has a dump trailer with the enclosure for leaves, the PTO impeller to get the leafs into the trailer, the hoses for deck-to-impeller, impeller-to-trailer.
       
      I haven’t run it in over a year.
      The battery and the cable to the battery probably need to be replaced.
      Comes with a new head gasket still in the bag.
      Seat is cracked but still comfortable.

      Hello all. I am looking for suggestions on adapting the pto from my C series tractor to a harbor freight predator 420 13hp engine. I know the predator motors are a controversial topic however it is the route I have chosen for this particular machine. The intent was to mostly use it for plowing so no PTO required but it would be handy to have. Looking to hear from someone that has successfully done the swap that may offer any advice before I attempt to transfer it over. Just looking for any general pointers that will help me along the way to make it go as smoothly as possible.

      1979 c-101 nice project tractor just needs a few odds and ends, steering wheel, coil, carburetor bowl, the wiring was redone by previous owner....all 4 tires are good and hold air it goes into all gears no problem, transmission fluid has been changed, 10hp Kohler, message me or call or txt with any questions, it does run and runs well,  it’s been kept inside since I’ve had it, I would also trade for a mid mount grader blade thanks
