fullerman 0 #1 Posted January 25, 2012 Hey guys, A friend of mine just gave me a 1965 875 model. Boy I tell you what it sure neede a bath, but other than that it seems to be in really great shape. It took me a couple of days to clean out the fuel system but after that the darn thing sprung back to life. It seems to run ok except for the charging system doesn't seem to be functioning correctly. I will go home tonite and try to check my voltage while running to see if it is putting anything out at all. My question is, doI have to polarize the s/c since it sat for about 6 years without a battery in it?
fullerman 0 #2 Posted January 25, 2012 Does anybody know anything about this little guy? I can't seem to find anything about it on this site at all.... :eusa-think:
Rollerman 290 #3 Posted January 25, 2012 What exactly are you looking for? I don't thiink you have to "repolarize" the starter/generator. Are your checking for current at the poles on the S/G or on the regulater tabs? Clean all the connections to & at the regulator, you may want to pull the cover & make sure the two contacts inside are clean as well...(they look similar to ignition points). Since the 875's Kohler K181 has a battery ignition it won't run at all unless the battery has a good charge to it. Have you replaced the battery or just jumped or charged an old one in it? stevasaurus 22,962 #6 Posted January 25, 2012 First...welcome to Red Square. Second, you do not need to repolorize (sp)...but you may want to check and clean all grounds if it has been sitting for 6 years. can't tell you how much those clean grounds mean to these little horses. As was said above...we love pictures...and we love to solve problems also. :)
fullerman 0 #7 Posted January 27, 2012 Sorry about not adding any photos but I didn't have any yet. I am just trying to find out whatever I can about this little guy. Rareity, problems, worth, why it was only produced for 1 year....... Just the basics. In my last post I commented about it not charging. I checked it out a little bit and I found that it is not charging at a low idle or at a higher rpm either. I removed the cover on the regulator and saw that one set of points functioned during starting and the other didn't seem to do anything during the run cycle. My voltage stayed steady at around 12.05 the entire time. It is a new battery and it is displaying the same voltage when it is not running. I am not sure exactly what to check next. All of my grounds are clean, as many as I can find anyway. . Not sure what to look at next.
dclarke 4,051 #8 Posted January 28, 2012 If it's been sitting for a long time the brushes may be stuck in the motor generator. You may want to check that.
KC9KAS 4,742 #9 Posted January 29, 2012 "why it was only produced for 1 year" Many Wheel Horse tractors were only made for 1 year.
Kelly 1,030 #10 Posted January 29, 2012 Well it's not Rare, but it is the first year for the square hood tractors, and was the first year for the hydro, 875 breaks down 8 as in 8hp / 7 means hydro / 5 is 1965 so the same basic tractor the next year was the 876, they stopped this in 68 they used names at that point the hydros became Chargers, good luck on the tractor. fullerman 0 #11 Posted January 29, 2012 Thank you dclarke for the suggestion about the brushes. I will look at them today..
Trouty56 567 #12 Posted January 29, 2012 Hi Fullerman....check out this post by another rs member. It is a fantastic thread about a non-charging starter/generator and the rebuild. http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php/topic/27722-startergenerator-rebuild/
smoreau 658 #13 Posted January 29, 2012 I would say that if the starter generator starts the engine and is spinning the motor over fine, that should be good, I have seen the points in the regulator not make good contact and not charge. Also is the gen. light on the dash working? key on engine off is it on? if the bulb working? that could be the problem also. As Steve said "check all grounds" I can say that is the biggest problem I had with mine.
