HorseFixer 2,012 #1 Posted July 1, 2008 Every one has their eYeBallS peeled and are on the lookout for "SPECIAL TRACTOR(s)" to add to their collection. Which ones are you looking for? I have a few and will list them here. I would like to see what everyone else has on their wish lists and why? Every one knows by now that I am pretty much a "Round Hood" guy. I have been truly blessed to acquire as many as I have in a short time. This is not to take away from any of the others I love UM ALL!! But I had to limit myself to a group of years that had fewer choices. I also decided within those years that showed a change in designs. But to add to the ones in my signature I guess here would be my list in order of preference. Let's keep it to your TOP 5. 1) A 46 or 47 Lever Steer This is a true tribute to the Ponds Genius and fabrication skills and ability to acquire old parts and put them back in service again, and build something from salvaged parts. Also being "HAND MADE & FABRICATED" I can appreciate the toil that went into these tractors. 2) A 55 Ride Away Senior This for the same reasons as the Lever Steer but to add a steering box and a sharp hood design and make a tractor more updated and futuristic for the times The Ponds answered the call to add a hood to satisfy their customers! 3) A 754 Need I say more? I guess because this showed that in the modern age of manufacturing the show must go on! Hence making a limited few that were manufactured more collectible! 4) A 701 This tractor was produced to do more work and increased horsepower was added in 1961 a guy who brought one of these Babies Home had to be the talk of his neighbor hood! As Tim Taylor Would Say! "MORE POWER" Errgh Errgh Errgh 5) A 1962 Lawn Ranger I don't know what I like about this tractor but I do! For one it was the first Lawn Ranger of the many years that Wheel Horse Produced them. And was one of the first tractors that the Ponds produced to just get back to the small lawns. And then theres the other ones I want...................... Just kidding Cheers Duke
nylyon-(Admin) 7,294 #2 Posted July 1, 2008 I got mine. 1974 C-160 Automatic!
Teddy da Bear 11 #3 Posted July 1, 2008 My favorite so far is my latest tractor. My 1972 Raider 10. With a 48" deck I am loving it! I am definately mowing grass faster. I have a feeling that I will enjoy my B-145 elec trac wheel horse once I get it running. The tractors I am looking for? The 1979+ D-250 with a 3pt. & 1972 Gt-14 with a 3pt.
CasualObserver 3,408 #4 Posted July 1, 2008 Duke... hate to be the bearer of bad news... but 1963 was the second year for the Lawn Ranger. Nice topic... my top 5 would be: 1955-57 RJ Walk-Away (any year) Suburban 550 Lever Steer or Rideaway Senior 2006 315-8 Classic All of the above are just 'cause I want them... no sentimental reasons or anything.
daemon2525 5 #5 Posted July 1, 2008 I'll not be specific because I do not know what numbers I am looking for yet. But my next two will be. 1. The very smallest tractor that I can find. For a couple of nieces and a grand kid can ride araound on. My first grandson is 6 months old. Too little yet? 2. The very biggest tractor I can find. I would like to have a Front loader on one.
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #6 Posted July 1, 2008 I guess there would only be one more model that I would make room for.... A 1267. I suppose a 754 would be nice too, but since I have a 753 and an 854, I could always just make my own. As far as favorites go, I absolutely love the front-engined, Kohler-powered round hoods. Next in line would be the 1966 to 1969 long frame, big block Kohler-powered gear drive tractors, like the 1056/57, 1257/67, and the Raider 12's. There's something about that l-o-n-g skinny hood that's just plain COOL! :D
combatmp29r 27 #7 Posted July 1, 2008 Hmm well I still need 3 of the V7 models for a full set and really I watch pretty hard for the CG7s and 8s. I don't have any of them yet so there is a year gap in the vert herd. Yes I have the pieces to make my own up, but thats not as much fun B)

My mistake! You are correct! and I Just fixed my post cked my wheel horse by years! Duke
Curmudgeon 28 #9 Posted July 1, 2008 My top five choices: 1) Anything free 2) Anything that costs nothing 3) Anything that I don't have to pay for 4) Anything in which no money leaves my pocket 5) Anything that does not involve my becoming less wealthy Does anyone see a trend there? B)
CasualObserver 3,408 #10 Posted July 1, 2008 I think you left out... Anything someone drops off so you don't have to spend gas money to get it. B)
DMESS 24 #11 Posted July 1, 2008 Hmmmmm, At the present I'm not really actively looking for anything. Now if something interesting comes along, well you know...... I'd like a Lever to complement the Senior(s). Stephen? A 706 would be nice. Logistics would be tough on that one. 420-LSE would be nice. Had my chance but too much $$$ 512-D would be REAL nice. Logistics again. 418-A, C or 8. Just like the maroon stripes especially the twins and the "18's" seem a bit more elusive around here. Favorites. It started with round hoods and I still love em. We've had every one of em from 64 on back except a few of the Rangers and a 604. (Maybe I need a 604 just to cover the bases. Teccy, ewww!). C-195 is next on the list and finally I really like the "maroon stripes". Now I do have this rebel black stripe in the fleet that I've become fond of named Pinky. I fear however that if she were to become shiny she just might revert to maroon!
rustbucket 4 #12 Posted July 1, 2008 my fav out of my mixed herd is deffinatly my GT-14. and will be even more once she gets into full useage and restored mode till then stuck running jacobsens to mow the comunity feilds.
MaineDad 85 #13 Posted July 1, 2008 I have saved searches on eBay for a C-160 auto. Always liked them.
hodge 6 #14 Posted July 1, 2008 I would say that while I don't have anything in particular on the radar, I am constantly looking for the next great deal. I prefer the 70's,80's,90's stuff, and would probably pounce on a B100, C120 or C160, if they appeared for the right price. I love what I have already. I wouldn't call myself a collector, but my aim is to have enough to get my mowing done for the rest of my life, without having to buy one of those stamped-steel pieces of junk.
refracman 167 #15 Posted July 1, 2008 The only one that I really want is a C120 hydro with hyd lift. It was the first one I bought and restored and sold when I bought the new one. It was before I became a "collector" . I have yet to see another one anywhere. And I have asked even pesterd the guy I sold it to and have come up snake eyes. So if somebody does know where one is I'd be willing to work some kind of deal
mailman 1 #16 Posted July 1, 2008 I'm with TT, I would love a nice Raider 12 Kohler powered gear driven in great shape or worth restoring.
Brrly1 1,146 #17 Posted July 2, 2008 Well, I might as well throw my two cents in as we all know its the GT14's but I really am kind of partial to the 57 rj's. They are kind of neat, because that was a really special year. I bet you can't guess why? See ya Burly
illinilefttackle 399 #18 Posted July 2, 2008 B) Hey Guys! Let me chime in here. I only have one tractor (wheel horse) and I dont really want a lot of them-just a couple or three. I really like my C-125 (engine being rebuilt) but being an old retired lineman, I like POWER to push and pull. Something to make my John Deere nieghbor --it his pants. Maybe a Super C or a D-200? Aw-well I can wish-I wispered my choices so the 125 wont hear-feeling kind of low right now, you know bad engine and all.-Thanks -AL
Rollerman 290 #19 Posted July 2, 2008 I've been pretty lucky to stumble on to some unique models so far. As a collector I have no true specific model or type of Horse I collect...there all nice. What I'd like to have or add to the herd would be a Senior. "Dustin" I had one...one of the nicest runners to be found actually & sold it so I supose it's karma if I don't get lucky twice. I'd also like to add a early large frame to the herd...953,1054, or 1054A A 753...never had one & seem to be elusive for me like BP & his 854's A Super C or 420-LSE would be nice as well. This list is subject to change by the day too. B)
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #20 Posted July 2, 2008 Wellllll I am not actively looking for tractors, though there are still a few implements I need. That said, I would love to own a 550, 500, 551, 501. I grew up with the 550 and I was born in 61 so either would be great. If I did find one (cheap) I'd probably sell the 854 (space is an issue). However, in my dreams I think the GT-14 would be cool as would a D series. Unfortunately I don't really consider the D's to be real Wheel Horse.
tdearstine 0 #21 Posted July 2, 2008 I really like my 857 but would love to find a D200 or D250, after seeing these at the show I really want one,
perry 82 #22 Posted July 2, 2008 im with dale anything for $0. but i like the wood grains and the round hoods.
BPjunk 184 #23 Posted July 2, 2008 Well I am still looking for a few of the Tecumseh powered models from the 60's BUT BUT BUT I warn anybody reading this ...... Ifn's a RJ-25 with original hood, steering wheel and engine comes up fer sale on Ebay, an estate auction, Craigs List, small town classified ad or private sale LOOKY OUT because I will pull out the highest and most powerfull caliber horse huntin' gun ya' ever saw to bag the RJ-25!!!! Wild Bill in Richmond, Va.
kpinnc 12,111 #24 Posted July 2, 2008 Don't know why, but I'd like to have one of the short frame hydros- 875, 876, 877... Like my 867, they just look stocky. 704 would be kinda nice... Of course, any round hood other than another crotch burner is a good thing. And who doesn't want a Super C? But, I have to agree with Dale. A freebie, even one that is a compilation of spare parts that dosen't even run is a good one by me.... I don't feel as bad making up whatever I want that way! chevelletown 37 #25 Posted July 2, 2008 This is a cool topic, its nice to know I'm not he only one with a "wish list" . Heck half the fun is the hunt, unless you have to go up against that high caliber gun that Bill has over there at his horse farm I keep learning and seeing new cool stuff to ad to list, its never ending Like Stephen I think they are all cool and my list changes every day or so. And its not just the tractors the attachments are just as addictive I've found myself mostly interested in the low production number, first year, and odd ball stuff like the 1045, 867, 701, 754, 1075 and the like. I'm still looking for a 603 and a 633 with the original enginge & carb and eventually I'd like to find a four wheel waggon. 523Dxi might be fun too I'd also like to find an older lawn skiff with some attachments. Red Square has really fueled this hobby for me. I think the best thing so far tho is all the great people I'm meeting B)
