dennist 139 #2 Posted January 24, 2012 The round hood guys will be with you shortly to tell you what it is, but till then- Welcome to RS!
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #3 Posted January 24, 2012 :WRS: I'm 99% sure the tractor is a '62 552. The engine is not the original, but it would be a suitable replacement.
NCtractorman83 1 #4 Posted January 24, 2012 Thanks Dennist Thanks TT, What is the original engine for the 552? It also has electric start, is it safe to assume it uses a starter, generator?
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #5 Posted January 24, 2012 The engine would have been a 5.5hp HT-55 (Tecumseh) Lauson with a gear-drive starter. The original engines are very tough to find so many are replaced with newer H-60 or HH-60 Tecumsehs.
NCtractorman83 1 #7 Posted January 24, 2012 I have been told by another source that it could also be a 702. the best way to tell is by the wiring.
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #8 Posted January 24, 2012 I told you I was 99% sure - I left the other 1% open because a Kohler on a 702 should still be on there and running. :handgestures-thumbup:

TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #11 Posted January 25, 2012 That was more of a "dig" at the bad reputation of a Tecumseh. Have any pictures of the front & back of the ignition switch?
NCtractorman83 1 #12 Posted January 25, 2012 ill get some tomorrow when i have some light out there, i have to use my phone without a flash.

TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #14 Posted January 26, 2012 Is there only one wire connected to the ignition switch?
NCtractorman83 1 #15 Posted January 26, 2012 Yeah, i only see one wire connectected and i dont see any remnants of old wires on the other 2 terminals
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #16 Posted January 26, 2012 That's a pretty good indication that the engine had magneto ignition. I'm going to stick with my original "guess" of it being a 552.
NCtractorman83 1 #17 Posted January 27, 2012 The only letters i can find on the switch is S and M on the top terminals i cant see anything on the bottom terminal. The only wire is on the M would that be power to the Magneto?
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #18 Posted January 27, 2012 Technically that wire grounds the magneto to "kill" the spark. When the key is in the off position, that terminal will be grounded to the tractor chassis/engine through the body of the ignition switch.
NCtractorman83 1 #19 Posted January 30, 2012 How difficult would it be to make the H60 i got with the tractor electric start? Also i need the mounting plate to go between the engine and frame. anyone know where i can find one?
kpinnc 11,899 #20 Posted January 30, 2012 Also i need the mounting plate to go between the engine and frame. anyone know where i can find one? I think I have one that I don't need. I only have one tractor with a Teccy on it. I'll PM you tomorrow. As has been said already, nice to see another NC fan!

NCtractorman83 1 #25 Posted February 5, 2012 Went and picked up a charger 12 and lawn ranger from the same guy i got the tractor in the original post from, and he had some parts he found for me low and behold he had the side cover i needed for this tractor and its 552 in big white letters haha. i just smiled when i picked it up and read it. Im going to use the electric start teccy from the ranger for the 552 hopefully the engine mounting plate will work as well.
