Hodge71 664 #1 Posted January 20, 2012 I got the call from my hydro guy today. He has my pump and hydro motor torn down off of my 73 18 horsepower auto. Unfortunately the news isnt good. The pump is shot, he feels it was run out of oil at some point recently thus causing scoring on the internals (maybe he said squash plates or some other kind of plates and pistons....IDK) and the motor isn't much better. The problem lies in that he contacted Sundstrand for parts and he was told that the parts are proprietary to Wheel Horse and can't be purchased throught Sundstrand. Has anyone heard of this before? He is an authorized Sundstrand repair facility so thats not a problem. I can't understand why this would be necessary or even feasible for that matter. I doubt that there are any parts available for this pump/motor through Toro. I'm going up to his shop on Monday and hes going to go over the motor and pump with me and show me all the damage that was done. Does anyone have a breakdown of the internals of these things with Sundstrand numbers? My Wheel Horse book on these Hydros has part numbers but they appear to be Wheel Horse numbers. dennist 139 #2 Posted January 20, 2012 On the propietary end I am not sure with this place and Sunstrand, but with John Deere and Yanmar you can not buy parts for a Yanmar for the JD unless you get them through JD! I called many places for the parts and they asked what the #s were and they would not help me at all saying I needed to buy through Deere only. Now, I am sure there are some people much more clever on the Yanmar parts and will be able to say they can get the parts in different places, but for the average guy you can not get them. It might as well be dead to them. I can't understand why Sundstrand would balk at selling parts for this. I'm at a loss here as to what to do. can whlvr 993 #4 Posted January 20, 2012 man your not having a good go at this one,when i took mine to my repair shop which also is a sundstrand place he had no problems,i didnt need too many parts but i know i needed the retainer ring,and some other part that he had a machine shop make,maybe talk to your toro dealer,but if hes like mine might as well talk to the wall Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

pfrederi 17,876 #6 Posted January 21, 2012 It is a swash plate he is talking about. As i recall it is a part of the cast iron motor housing or the cast iron end of the pump. Those casting are probably unique to Wheel Horse. If he can't clean/polish them you could pick up a used pump or motor from ebay and he could use the castings (Housing) from them. The parts that most often need replacement are the 9 pistons, the block and valve plate that go together and are sold as a unit. They are common to numerous Sundstrand products and while not cheap are available through Sundstrand. He should have no problem getting those. Hodge71 664 #7 Posted January 21, 2012 Don, You are correct, I am not having "a good go at this one" I cannot believe how I went from a $40 set of steel lines from the pump to the motor to over a grand worth of repairs to this point with the hydro and motor alone. Its been a very long tough road. Paul, For some reason what you're saying rings true with his explanantion. I guess what happened was when the o-rings were blown out because the load was too much for the system to handle, they ran it out of oil and thus causing the swash plate to gall very badly. He said its normal to have some wear there on a 39 year old tractor but the damage he found was definitely cause by lack of oil. I think thats why polishing it out is not a possibilty. Just my luck,huh. I hope the motor isnt as bad as the pump and should be able to be repaired. I will find out more on Monday. Its very hard to be in this position. As I look out my window, I have 4 inches of snow right now and another 4 coming throughout the day today. So much for having a plow tractor....... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
