856 transmission problems

Recommended Posts

galaxiejoe

When we had the snow storm in October I mounted the plow blade on the 856 and tried to clear the snow. I only got a few passes then something went, now with the tractor in gear it will only rock back and forth. The drive belt is new so I don't think it is slipping, did the tranny blow and what are my option to fix it?

Is your tractor free wheeling or locked in gear?

If it's free wheeling or skipping check the wheel hubs.

They are positioned on the axle with a woodruff key & a bolt with a jam nut to keep things tight.

When they work loose the key & key way start to wear.

Then your hub can free wheel, skip on, or slide off the axle.

If it's locked up, at the base of the shifter (forward side) is a set screw. (pain to get to)

Loosen that up till you can remove the shifter & make sure the shift gates are lined up.

Similar to this "[ ]" if one is ahead or behind the other & your shifter is jamed, your trying to use to gears at once locking the trans.

I agree with Stephen...sounds like the woodruff in the axle and hup...replace them both if it turns out to be that. You can match the keys up at a Tractor Supply. cheap fix. :)
