CTPATRIOT 12 #1 Posted January 5, 2012 I've noticed some 8 speeds have it and some don't.If the oil is fresh and everything works well, should it be a concern?
sorekiwi 761 #2 Posted January 5, 2012 Hard to say without hearing it. Straight cut gears do tend to whine, but if your box is whining more than others there may be a problem. An abnormal whine can be caused by worn bearings letting the shafts get out of alignment. Or maybe its just a noisy box... No help at all, right?? :)
Hydro 131 #3 Posted January 5, 2012 I recently bought an 88 416-8. The gear lube was brick red. A friend speculated...don't know, it sat so long the inside of the cast iron gear case that was not exposed to oil began to rust? Again don't know but I drained the rear end, flushed the gear case with diesel and replaced the oil. No noise. No issue. Works great.
Rollerman 290 #4 Posted January 6, 2012 I've never noticed this gear whine over the bark of a Kohler?
Shuboxlover 478 #5 Posted January 6, 2012 Or maybe its just a noisy box... Usually a dinner and a movie will quiet them down...or really nice jewelery. Could be as simple as unloading the dishwasher even...they're hard to figure out sometimes. :eusa-think:
stevasaurus 22,700 #6 Posted January 7, 2012 I would ask how long you have had this horse. If you just got it, that is one thing...if you have had it for some time...how much do you use it and for what. If you are mowing for 1/2 hour or more once a week all summer, did you notice a change? If you do not use it much, maybe run it a little more and see if things change. I would not worry about a "whine" so much as I would some other kinds of noises. You could maybe do a video, and we could listen to it with you. Gosh...sometimes I just love technoligy. Let us know. :)
Forest Road 594 #7 Posted January 7, 2012 I had some new found whine in an 8 speed last year. I flushed and filled it twice and it still wasn't right. I raised the rear wheels off the ground and put it in gear. Then I used a 24" screw driver as a stethoscope. Putting the tip near bearings and my ear to the handle I could easily hear grinding sounds on one side. When I took it apart one of the roller bearings completely fell apart. Trust me you'll know if there's anything wrong using this method. If nothing else hopefully this will put your mind at ease.
Don1977 604 #8 Posted January 9, 2012 If it is louder when turning it may be a bearing. I broke a bearing pulling some small trees. When turning it would scream .
CTPATRIOT 12 #9 Posted January 9, 2012 Same noise going straight or turning. It has fresh fluid, makes some noise but i'm not gonna worry unless it gets real loud.
