Should I be concerned...

Hello,

So the transmission swap on my C160 Auto is nearly complete... On the one hand I am excited since I know the pump and motor on this tranny work (tested last night)... On the other hand I'm concerned about something that I noticed in installing the hubs...

While on jack stands, when you rotate the one hub the other rotates in the opposite direction (normal)... But there is a clicking/jerking in this replacement tranny (90-2046... hydrogear) that I did not have on my original one (90-1140...piston-piston). Under power from the engine the axles move together... But what is with the lack of smooth motion in hand rotation? Do I have a worn differential or stripped gear or is this normal? Repeat: the original tranny had smooth rotation in this same test.

That's encouraging, Scott! (thank you) Any Sundstrand owners have this experience? I believe this replacement tranny is from a Charger or Bronco.

Sounds like the park pawl is trying to engage.

Do you have the drive belt tensioner pushed down in the "operate" position?

Belt tensioner is in the operate position... so

It does seem to drive well -- no noticeable hitching/grinding/clicking so perhaps it's fine. Crossing fingers...

Had it running out in the yard... got it heated up nicely and it was plowing the gravel driveway much as I remember the piston-to-piston unit doing so. It does seem to speed up a *bit* more than the original tranny on downhills... nothing I can't control with the speed lever. This is something I think you get used to with hydros...

Whole transaxle... Degreased, freshly painted, new drive belt and idler. Even had to weld/reinforce the frame where the transmission mounts... The classic cracks were present. Thank goodness my neighbor has a welder!

You are hinting at something though... Do the older hydrogear pump/motor units bolt on to the newer Sundstrand lower units? They connect similarly... I don't know if you can mix and match in this area. Anyone?
