removing paint? 1974 B-100

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about bead blasting the rearend, footboards, and other smaller parts. Will the bead blasting cause any problems with glass getting inside rearend? Also looking for ideas on removing paint from engine. Wondering what to use that would bring the shine back to the outside of the carburetor. I was looking for suggestions on how to remove the hubs from the rearend. Is beadblasting to aggressive if there is little or no rust on hood, fenders etc.. KEB

im not sure if i would chance blasting the rear end, unless it was stripped totally. ive heard hydros arent happy with any sort of dirt in there and i guess i wouldnt want to chance it no matter how well you mask/plug up any openings. ive blasted a few engine blocks and a manual trans case, all were stripped down as far as possible, with the exception of inner axle bearings in the trans halves. they were masked as well as i could and the grit still got in there. had to wash them really well to get them clean. i wouldnt want to be doing that with a hydro. the carb and engine block would be fine as long as you strip them down. i blast my carbs and blow the excess media off before throwing them in the carb cleaner and let the cleaner get the rest of the media out. as far as the other parts go, blasting can remove paint really quickly and its my preferred choice, just watch you pressure on items such as the hood as you can make more body work for yourself.

for the hubs i made a home made puller with a peice of angle iron,i cut a hole in the middle large enough for a 3/4 bolt, welded a 3/4 nut on the backside of that hole, thats where the bolt threads through and pushes on the axle, then i drilled holes that line up to the wheel bolt holes, threaded 5 bolts into the hub and tighten the 3/4 bolt,a little heat from a propane torch on the hub and i get them off every time

Should I use some sort off paint stripper for rear end. It doesn't need rebuilding. it works well. what about the pitted parts on the housing?

Be gentle pulling the hubs off, the parts are cast and can break. I ended up using a puller, heat, and kept tapping on the on the puller as I turned it.

I just sanded, wire-brushed, cleaned, primered and painted. This is a 312-A rear end.

You could use baking soda as a medium for blasting. It is used in car restorations when they don't want to tear the whole engine down but want to blast it clean.

When preparing the frame, rearend, front axle, hubs and other cast metal parts before painting. what grade sandpaper is used? Any suggestions on preparing these would be great. Does anybody use clear coat after painting? KB
