Your point is very valid, but on the same token I have seen a rodent take out a pair of professional redundant "military type" datacenters too (for 2 days) so the problem is never eliminated.

The other difference is this would only be a single service, not a service for "customers" where 24x7 staffing would be critical.

Nylon, I am new here only been on line a month. As you may have read in one of my post's I really use this site allot and have made 2 new friends here. I started using this page so much that it is my home page now. Like some others I am still learning all the in's and out's of the tools here. I have found this site to be informative, educational and a form of relaxation. I for one am willing to donate to the cause. I am on disability/retired payments from the Police dept. so my income is limited but I would be willing to donate to what ever is needed to make this work. Thank you for all your investment in time and energy to this project. I am sure there are others who feel the same.

Sincerely, Chris Elliott

What the hell Chris.. My name is Charles Elliott... are we related somehow? lol :eusa-think:

Secondly Nylyon, if you decided to do this, though I know you can't foot the initial bill, I have a spare computer at my house, that I could probably get my cousin to set up... Its going to the dump if nothing happens with it anyways... Its about 5 years old... I could talk to my cousin, get his input on it and let you know... If your interested, also instead of running redsquare off of that initially, we might be able to set up a secondary site, just to see how it functions without all of redsquare transferring over at once... If you so choose to make it as such. I mean, there are enough people on here, that if you brought up the idea of donations on top of what some of the supporters pay if they are interested in such a move. I for one would donate $20 towards it. ( I would donate more and become a supporter if I could, but being in college and with the recent holidays, I'm broke!) Bah-hum-bug! :scared-ghostface:

Sent you a PM Coach...but I'd like to publicly voice my dis-like of the server Idea...it might be nice for all of us, but you do too much already!

While considering this, IF it were to be hosted by me, it would be run in a VMWare virtual image on a Mac computer. The computer would be dedicated to running VMWare Fusion and *most* resources would be dedicated to running RedSquare. To put a couple things aside.

  1. Hosting here would likely be easier for me. The reason is backups. Currently I have to TAR the filesystems then gzip them and copy over the internet to my computer here. I then need to extract the database, and copy it. All told, our forum is currently about 1GB in size. Although it may not seem like much, consider that 2 months ago it was 150MB! Having a local server a USB drive could be attached for backups. Additionally VMWare images can be snapshot creating a virtual backup of the COMPLETE environment. Recovery in case of failure would take minutes!
  2. I do work from home already, and my computer equipment is crucial to me. My home network is extremely robust, and on complete battery backup as would be RedSquare. However the BBU would last all of 3 or 4 hours in the event of an extended power failure. My cable internet is rarely down (far more reliable than any of our current hosting partners)
  3. There IS a risk that in the event that something went wrong, if I (or a family member) were not around (i.e.: Vacation) that would be a definite issue. But again, my home computing environment is pretty robust but the risk is still there.
  4. I have older computer equipment too, but I would not run RedSquare on anything that is old. I am Mac centric, not just because it's a Unix operating system, but the hardware is top shelf stuff.

We still need to weigh the cost, risks etc. What I can say is that on our current host our availability for the last 30 days is 94.5% and that is a VERY poor number. Over the last 30 days at my house, the availability has been 100%.

In short, for me personally, hosting here is less work, but it is not without risk which I am weighing. Hosting with a hosting company we WILL be on shared servers, unless we want to spend over $100 / month which isn't very cost effective in the long run.

One thing to keep in mind. I am an Architect with IBM and I do this EXACT thing every day (ok for very large corporations, but....) the right choice will be made.

Karl, maybe you could get that generator you have always been talking about but haven't had the time to get. That would be a Great backup powersupply unless you run out of fuel.

My big concern is what if something happens to you? Hardware is one thing, but what about the human element? I don't mean to sound grim, but suppose you were to suddenly become indisposed? Would someone else be able to assume your role? Other admins could do the custodial work via the internet, but who would maintain the hardware in your house?

I have a good cable provider, but good as it is, I still get outages. If I remember correctly, you were without power and internet for quite some time back during and after the hurricane and had to work via your smartphone. That worked because the server was somewhere else.

If all the eggs are in one basket...well you know the rest of the story.

Again, just my 2 cents worth, and some food for thought.

I am using XP with Firefox 8.0.1 on both my laptop and my desktop. I have no issues related to any of the problems listed above. My only problem is occasional slowness and random database errors.

Please, if you're having a technical issue start a new thread in the Site Suggestions area. Don't append onto another problem or post (or PM / email me) as I can not track problems that way.
