System performance

Recommended Posts

33 seconds to process this posting screen. I know you all have not been complaining about the performance and availability of the forum (at least to me) but what I am seeing is just unacceptable. I have been sending help tickets to iPages and the response is just as unacceptable.

So... I am currently searching for a new host. The next move will be transparent to you (except for the outage which will be incurred) and no date has been planned.

I am very disappointed with iPages and apologize for the poor performance and availability

It's still working better than Forumer was at the end.

Well it's up (but only 94.9% of the time) Industry standard is 99.9% or 99.99%

It seems faster now than it was earlier today. I've noticed it seems to come and go. Is that traffic related?

There's some issue with the connectivity between the database and the application. I suspect that there are some companies sharing the service who have heavy workload during the day because at night it seems to be better, except when it goes down. When I bring up the performance issues to these guys, I am getting brushed off, and they have no intention to look into it any deeper than reading my mail and checking to see if they can "access" the site. The good news is they have a good cancellation policy!

Some of us talked the other night in chat...

So I have been paying attention...

Here is a "for instance"....

Right now I have 3 forums open in separate tabs on Firefox.

This forum is taking 30 to 45 seconds or more to load a page, the other 2 are instant.

These are the other two forums.

http://forums.coolridesonline.net

http://www.heymow.com

I have very high speed equipment and connections.

I am not complaining....just an FYI!

I know, that's why I want to get out now. The performance is not getting better as I had expected, but getting worse and I keep directing the support people to where they should be looking but it's pointless. As you guys may or may not be aware, I am not an amateur at this kind of thing, and my expectations are not out of line for the price of the service. I have a good idea who our next host will be, but I am really taking the time to research this one.

My delays are ranging from 20 sec to over 1 minute. In order to switch to another host do we need to throw more $$$ in the pot? Thanks for staying after it.

I will say that my load times are typically in the 40 second range for this forum. Sometimes it is well over a minute or two. As in I load a page then go pour a cup of coffee. I've never loaded a page instantly here. I would say around 5 seconds is about the fastest. I'm not complaining. I love the information here. I'm a newer member and hope I can contribute with my creativity in the future. On a side note I spend many many hours on (although not recently) LS1Tech.com and I load those pages instantly almost every time.

As for the money, there's enough, and iPages will refund the unused portion of the year so no worries there. I am very disappointed with the performance and issues that are not getting resolved. We'll get it fixed, this forum should not be like this.

It is better than the old forumer but I've been having issues, just I'm not one to complain much, but load times are slow, and a few other issues that I was going to point out after things settled down after the move and the holidays.

sometimes i get errors and the site loads slow sometimes. i just thought the speed thing was on my end as i have issues with other sites as well. my biggest disappointment has been the sudden disappearence of the iphone app and one that im using now works nowhere near as good as the ip board one we started with.... the phone is what i was using 75 % of the time to post, but now i can only do text and not upload pics, so i dont bother with the app at all......

I have experienced no problems...not necessarily INSTANT access but within 3-5 seconds....I hate moving, guess I better start packing.

This move will be easier for you all trust me, it will just take some time.

And try the mobile version again (the removal of the app from the app store isn't me, they are trying to fix it because of all the issues like this one)

Hey Nylyon just an idea, did you ever think about running a server from inside your home? Of course you would need the server (computer) and software to do it. But that would be a onetime thing, I mean in the future hardware upgrades would be necessary but not for awhile. My cousin runs servers out of his house, hooked up to his home high speed internet. Let me know what you think, I may be able to get my cousin to help out. Hes a genius when it comes to computer programming though he chose to become a photographer...

Yes, I have thought about it. It's about $600 for the server (I'm Mac centric) then an additional $35 / month business internet line (have to have dedicated IP address). The speed would be awesome, backups a snap, storage really unlimited. The first year costs would be high (and I can't foot the initial bill) but second year wouldn't be as bad. It's the initial up-front costs which are the biggest obstacle.

As a note, I am currently considering this as a viable option. There are some very strong benefits to this, the strongest includes data-recovery should we ever have an issue. There are some strong disadvantages as well which include my house is not a datacenter and I am a staff of 1. Currently weighing the options.

I have a friend that ran an entire ISP from his basement in the 1990's. Everything was fine until a contractor working in the area dug through his power and phone lines. He had power backup, but there was no way of connecting to the internet. The entire ISP was down for days. Another problem was the "staff of 1". Even though he had help, he felt that he could never leave for any length of time. Vacations were out of the question and sick time was a problem. He ended up moving the entire setup to a commercial facility near his local phone provider, and has a staff of 10 now.

My vote is to use a trusted off-site host that is well staffed and uses the most modern technology.
