i just got the honda engine mounted on my 502 i used a 3 in pulley. i found the belt i needed at the parts house got it installed and draind the oil water out of the rearend and filled it with motor oil 40 weight just to flush it out. wen i fired her up and was going through the gears to help flush the rearend. it all worked fine but then all of a suden it acts like a (syncronizer) went out in a truck transmission or something it wont go in any gear with the engine running it just grinds.wen shut off it feels fine. ive herd of this before on here but cant find the thread does anybody know what it could be any help is greatly apreciated thanks. o also wen going through the gears i wasnt moving more than a foot or two i didnt want to run it long because i was draining the rearend a couple more times to clean it out.

Sounds like the drive belt did not completely stop when you went to change gears :scratchead: . Was the drive belt guard on during the testing? If not try it again with the guard on.

Keg...if you have a Honda engine on a 502 or what was a 502...I am not sure any belt guard will fit and work without some kind of fabrication. Basically the belt guard holds the slack from the belt and keeps it over the pulley grooves when the clutch pedal is depressed. This allows the transmission to stop rotating and allows for changing gears. When you think of how it all works...the belt guard IS THE CLUTCH. Do you have the old belt guard? If so, you may be able to see what I am talking about. The bends on the outside, and the 1 or 2 tabs on the inside are what makes it work. Some pictures and once we see what you have, we can get some measurements, and you may be able to make or fabricate something that will work for you. Let us know...post some pictures. The Honda pulley height, size and distance from the pulley on the trans are some of the critical measurements we will want to see. A belt guard from any of the 1961 to 1964 round hoods could help with the modifications if you do not have the original 502 guard.
