CTPATRIOT 12 #1 Posted December 26, 2011 Went with a buddy to look at a C-120(we think)with an 8 speed. When jacked up in the rear, one hub has some wobble and the axles slide in/out a bit when you push or pull on them.Does the wobble meen the hub is bad? Also is the axle movement normal? The gearbox is quiet, oil looks new and works perfect.Any advice would be great! racinfool40 202 #2 Posted December 26, 2011 Is the hub wobbling or does the axle move up and down??? Some axle play in and out is normal but up and down movement of the axle is a bad sign of Needle bearing failure inside the axle tubs...If just the hub is wobbling then the hub is bad. Probably because the key sheard on the axle and the set screw came loose. New hubs or used one's can be had pretty reasonable..I'd pull the hub and check the inside and look at the key way slot in the hub..I bet it's worn and also check the axle for wear or grooves. Sparky-(Admin) 21,405 #3 Posted December 26, 2011 The wobble makes me think the hub has been loose for a long time and the hole in the hub has enlarged. Not sure on the axle sliding in and out. How far in and out? Mike..........
pfrederi 17,881 #4 Posted December 26, 2011 I wouldn't worry about the in/out movement if it is 1/8" or less. The hub wobble probably means the hub is toast. As indicated you need to look at the keyway in the axle. Push for a lower price!
can whlvr 993 #5 Posted December 27, 2011 hopefully it didnt destoy the axle as well, you need to look at it close, probally the hub needs to come off and check the keyway in the axle too
CTPATRIOT 12 #6 Posted December 28, 2011 Well, the tractor sold after we looked at it...I checked out the rear of my "77 C-120 today,i have a loose hub also!!!I plan to pull it off and check it out.Where's the best place to get a new one?(dealer?)
Sparky-(Admin) 21,405 #7 Posted December 28, 2011 It may not need replacement yet. Give it a good look over for wear. It just might need to have the setscrew and jam nut tightened. Mike.........
CTPATRIOT 12 #8 Posted December 31, 2011 Well i just pulled the hub,and the slot is opened up pretty good. The key was not sheared, and the axle is perfect.Would a local dealer be a good place to get a new hub and key?Part #'s?I really don't want to be working on this right now, burried my grandmother yesterday who was basicly my mother.Any help would be great...I just need to get this buttoned up and put the snow thrower on. stevasaurus 22,866 #9 Posted December 31, 2011 Sorry about your lose...never easy...especially this time of year. My thoughts and prayers. I would just switch the hubs for now, if it is not that bad and check that out. You should be able to get one from one of the members out your way...or for sure, at the show next year. Someone would probably give you one. Check to see if the axle is 1" or 1 1/8" though.
