Jake Kuhn 1,555 #1 Posted December 19, 2011 Well my grandparents had a 73 140 they wanted me to have and went and got it tonight.She had all the paper work to it and she has completely bored the engine and bought a new hydrauilic clutch for $300 .It looks to be in good shape besides the hood and some white paint on the left fender.Lucky for me I have a nice hood and grill sitting upstairs. It had been sitting for 2 years without running and she never touched the battery,I got there and it started right up.It also came with a really heavy duty John Deere dump cart.I will try to get some better pictures tomorrow when it is light out,Jake Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Ken B 3,164 #8 Posted December 20, 2011 On the cart, it all depends on whether or not there is a desperate Deere guy needing one to put the finishing touch or the cherry on top of a recent restoration. I do know of a few that sold in the 250-400.00 range. Condition is everything. You could make that 140 look real nice in a jiffy. No need to go crazy on a full blown resto if the mechanics of the tractor are good. The hood looks to be decent, time saved there. Spend some time cleaning and prepping, then bust out a six pack of Rustoleum John Deere green paint, maybe two cans of yellow and you'd have a sweet 140 there in no time. CasualObserver 3,408 #10 Posted December 20, 2011 I saw you mentioned white paint. Are you sure it is a 73? If you're not sure, I'd check more into that white paint. Is the green on top of the white, or white on top of the green? I see you have a few other square fender John Deere's in your list, so you know about patio tractors, right? Be aware they do not allow "What's it Worth" questions, but you can do a search and there should be 80 carts listed in the classified sections there. BTW, I also have a 140H1, a 1970. It needs an engine, but I have a line on one from a JD 312 that should bolt right in. The 140s are excellent tractors, and as mentioned, especially the H3s. There should be turning brakes on the right side of the tractor and no clutch peddle on the left..I have two 140 H3's a 1973 and a early 1968. The 1968 and I believe early 1969's have rear disc brakes and the later models have drum style brakes with two peddles ( one for each rear wheel ) on the right side of the tractor ( sitting on the tractor ). Your tractor appears to be a early model as you only have the clutch disconnect peddle on the left side. I have a 1970 H1 which has turning brakes, but the later ones, from about '71 or '72 up didn't have them. A 1973 H1 didn't have turning brakes. But a '73 will have the improved transmissions.
