gratefulydeadman 25 #1 Posted December 19, 2011 This is my first post on here so first i just want to say hello. Now that thats done its time to get down to business... On 12/17/2011 i purchased what i believe to be a 701. It came with the origional seat pan, engine(with broke rod), double belt pulley on enigine and genterator, double pulley cover, foot shaped pedals, and correct plow bracket for year. But...... It also came with an HY2 hydraulic lift system on it. I have read that it was an origional option. I have also read that the HY2 system wasnt introduced until 1962. So my question is was the HY2 system an option for this model? Or was it added later? Another thing that confuses me is that i have read that the shift lever only had one bend towards the bottom of it on the 701. im pretty sure that mine has a double bend to allow room for the hy2 system. problem is that i have read that the double bend wasnt introduced until 1962 either. Could someone please tell me what the differences are between the 701 and 702? thanks ralph ps.... i will be posting pics in the next couple of days
Kelly 1,029 #2 Posted December 19, 2011 Well welcome, and yes the HY2 was a option in 62, and they had a template you could follow to heat and bend the orig. shifter to clear the HY kit, so I would say yes it was added later, but a nice up grade if you ask me. TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #3 Posted December 19, 2011 :WRS: It would take a lot of typing to explain the differences between the 701 and the 702. The best thing you can do is look at the pictures in the gallery and in the various posts featuring those models. :handgestures-thumbup:
gratefulydeadman 25 #4 Posted December 19, 2011 Here is the only pic of the 701 I have. This is where she was sitting when I found her.
Indy w h 5 #5 Posted December 19, 2011 Yep it's a 701 !! And it looks restorable !! Nice find !! If you need seals for the HY pump or the cylinder let me know I sell them Indy
gratefulydeadman 25 #6 Posted December 19, 2011 Thanks indy. Do u know if the Hy2 was an option for the 701? How much are the new seals for the hy2? I am interested in purchasing a set considering the pump has sat empty for years. It was taken off the 701 and kept inside a garage away from the elements. Thanks
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #8 Posted December 19, 2011 Do u know if the Hy2 was an option for the 701? The "2"in HY-2 represents 1962 - the production year of the tractors it was designed for. The kit was introduced part way into 1962, so therefore it was not an option in 1961 - but it will fit the 701, so some were added later. As soon the hydraulic lift kit was introduced, all tractors produced from then on had the two-bend shifter.
gratefulydeadman 25 #9 Posted December 19, 2011 I paid $175 for the 701. It came with everything but the correct belt cover. It also came with the hy2 lift system and front wheel weights. Motor has a broken rod and needs rebuilt:(. Did I get this all for a good price?
Docwheelhorse 2,669 #10 Posted December 19, 2011 Beautiful find..... glad to see it will be saved. The HY2 setup is something I would like to have on one of my rides someday..... Welcome to Red Square Tony
Kelly 1,029 #11 Posted December 19, 2011 As I said in our PMs you did great, the HY kit is worth that much if complete and in good shape.

dclarke 4,032 #13 Posted December 19, 2011 Looks like a keeper Ralph, the 701 is one of my favorite models. Be sure to post lots of pics as you work on it. Better make room for your next one 'cause these things are addicting. Good luck with it. :WRS:
wheelhorse656 20 #14 Posted December 19, 2011 . looks like a nice find! Great deal!!! we got a 702 last year for $35 the guy said it had a bad engine. got it home and took the shroud off and found out all that was wrong is somone used to long of a bolt and it got cought between the fins on the flywheel. a shorter bolt some gas and an oil change and she was puring like a kitten. you might check that first unless you know for sure it has a broken rod. grnlark 487 #20 Posted December 20, 2011 For starters, welcome to Redsquare! Looks like a pretty solid 701 you found. They're cool machines for sure. I have an original 702 with the HY-2. If you need pictures of anything, feel free to reach out.
AMC RULES 37,132 #21 Posted December 20, 2011 Grnlark, that 702 is one of the baddest tractors on the forum.
CasualObserver 3,408 #22 Posted December 20, 2011 Ralph, and congrats on the 701. Seems to have been a lot of those found/changed hands this year. I got mine last year. It's been slightly modified but will be a future restoration project. I also have easy access to it if you need any pictures. If you want to see a nice restoration, look up the 701 done by Denny (dclarke) a couple years back. (here's the link.... ) I really like the rear shoes on your 855...are they 23x8.50-12 Tru-Powers or an off-brand? Either way, I like the way they look.
