416-H transaxle gearing question ???

Hi I am kind of new to the posting on red square, but I have a question that I hope someone out there can answer. I have a 1990 416-H and the question is I have been considering getting a 520-HC due to the top travel speed, reason is I haul hay back to my cattle with my Wheel horse. It is quite a distance and I found out that the 520-HC has a top speed of 7.4mph. While my 416-H is approx 5.6mph(guessing with gps). I was wondering what is the difference in the transaxle or the hydro pump to get this tractor to go that speed. Is the hydro pump turning more rpm due to a different pulley size, or is it actually geared different in the transaxle ? Or is the entire transaxle completely different, which then it would be easier to buy that tractor which is very difficult to find. Thank you for any info that will help me out, and possibly help my 416-h go alittle faster.

I'd look at the toro parts viewer. Figure out whats different. Might be just as simple as a drive pulley. I really don't know. OR you could get an 8 speed change the drive pulley and hit 10 -15 mph. That'd be the easy way to go. Good luck!!!!

Thank you I was not aware that I could get on a micro fisch and look up parts and compare part numbers. I actually found that they use the same gears in the transaxle but the pulleys are different off the engine to the hydro pump. Mine has #7466 in the front #106165 in the rear, the 520-HC has #7443 in front and #108316 in the rear. Does this mean that the only difference is the hydro pump is turning more rpm in which makes the tractor go slightly faster ? Can anyone tell me if this is the only difference ? Thank you for any help, I am just trying to keep this as original as possible.

The online parts lists are sometimes clear as mud, so you'll want to use caution when trying to compare parts between similar models.

I'm thinking that the engine & pump pulleys are the same size on the H and HC models, but I haven't dug that deep yet.

Either way, there is definitely gearing changes within the transaxle gearing on the HC models - starting with the gear on the pump, both gears on the cluster shaft, and the reduction gear on the pinion shaft.

The 516/518/520-H models were 20/46 teeth to 20/46 teeth, while the HC was 22/44 teeth to 22/44 teeth. All models had the same pinion to ring gear ratio. (11/43 - or 3.91:1 )

Thank you very much for that info that puts a whole new perspective on things now, I actually dug deeper and I did find that gear ratio but it is not made very clear in the toro web site at all and those parts are also discontinued. So now I am thinking that I will probably have to find one of those tractors and add it to my collection. Some of these tractors are just so hard to find, that is what I actually wanted to begin with but I could not find one in a resonable distance to drive, so thats when I found my 416 because I wanted the hydro lift for the snowblower. I also want to find a 420-LSE but from what I am learning pretty much tough luck with that one. But anyways what I have for now is my 416-H , 312-8, 202-8, 212-H, and a A-100. Still looking for a 308-8 for sentimental reasons (my grandfather had one) and a 520-HC if I cant make my 416 do what I want it to do. Anyways thanks again for the help.
