Repairing Plastic Headlight Lens

Has anyone repaired a plactic headlight lens? The one on the GT 14 i'm working on is broken in a few places. I found all of the pieces except for a section at the top which is kinda a grey color. I'm thinking of gluing all the pieces together and then filling the missing section with epoxy, Then painting the grey line at the top. I'm sure it won't be perfect, but the rest of the tractor is far from perfect. Just a worker and I think it will work better than a broken lens.

Has anyone tried this type of repair before?

If so, I would buy a new one to be honest. I see them pop up all the time on Ebay. But that's just me.

if you have the peices and its a worker glue it,there are many glues that will work,if shes a restore then maybe a new one would be in order,i spent on a new one for my c160,didnt have it more than a week,plowing some brush in the bush a branch broke it and its been broke since

Yep been there and done that more then once. A new one from parts tree is around $27 and I have 2 extra left, And one original in good shape with the foiled horse emblem. But if its a worker and you want more light then get some plexie glass from your local hardware and use that. much brighter!

It does look simular to the lens shown, but the wheelhorse in the center is more detailed and is chrome plated.

I think i'm going to try to glue it up. I won't be out anything but glue...

Does the permatex that has been mentioned dry completely clear? The info about it on the internet say it's "creamy"

I have used Crazy Glue it may not have been the brand name but it was the same type. That was around 1988 and it's still holding.

ive used crazy glue also,and i also get instant glue at a place called lee valley,dont know if they exist in the states but they have alot of nice instant glues

I'd try to repair your original one, the early ones look so much nicer than the ones you get now.

Thanks for all the input. I glued it up and painted the lens today. It looks good from a distance. But you can see defects when you get real close.

Nice save, I have thrown away better than you started with, I'm lucky to have 2 NOS old style lens, with the chrome horse head.

That looks good....heck what I did was got a piece of plexi at the HD and cut it to fit with a scroll saw and sanded the edges. Then put frog tape where I wanted it clear, scuffed up the plexi and painted it black (on the inside). I ought to check to see if there is a little WH sticker to stick on the inside middle before painting. Looks a little racoony but it is real cheap.

NAPA has those light holders too for like 5 bucks w/ the wire and spring.

Thanks for all the compliments guys! I have to buy some paint so i have about 7 bucks and a few hours in the job.

yeah it dried perfectly clear where i attached the two broken pieces together. The area where I had to fill in the missing section had lots of bubbles and had a slight yellow tone to it, but the yellow color might have been from the tape i used to make the mold.
