Saved one from the crusher

Found this on the front of a trailer that was hauling cars for scrap.

The engine would not turn over and needless to say was very hard to steer.

Noticed that the dents in or rather out on the fan shroud.

,

Thought that was very strange and needed a little CSI right away.

Got the fan shroud off and found a few loose parts.

,

After digging through the loose fins, found the lifting (on top of the flywheel)

bracket that should have been on a head bolt had found it's way to the flywheel. Suspect

that the head gasket was replaced and ... well, where did that thing go must

not be important. Bet it made one heck of a noise.

Picked up a flywheel off $bay gave it a fresh drink and fired right up. The lift

cylinder leaks, needs a steering wheel and some deck belts and look out grass.

I think that motor has the MUMPS! Do you know a good mechanic that can work on that for ya!

Ya need to mount that 1960 blower on that and chuck some snow!

That was a great save. I hate seeing good tractors going to scrap. This made my day seeing a good tractor getting a new life.

Now Duke, strange you would bring that up. Do you need me to come up there and help you find

all the parts you have scattered all over the floor? AND while I'm there we can look for the

gearbox for that old snow blower. You need to keep a watch out for a post in the modification

forum for project SNOW CHUCKER jr. Not to be confused with the original 'snow chucker'.

I really enjoy hearing about scrap yard saves. If you have a yard close to you, get over there and look around. You can leave your phone number and what you will come get at some places and they will call you when something comes in. The most I have ever paid at my local scrap yard is $107 for a garden tractor. Finding a Wheel Horse is pretty tough around here but I did get a C-121 this year. I have picked up about 10 since about the middle of May this year and most have been for $50 plus sales tax. I have only had to replace two engines in that time.

I check once or twice a week and there are others who do the same so you have to be there first with the money or it's gone. It's a good place for impliments too because they usually have no idea how much to charge and will take almost any offer. And for godsake don't tell them how much you sell the stuff for or you'll pay more for everything you get. Even with scrap prices high a tractor weighs less than 1000 lbs. most around 600.

Hey, check the Yellar pages...there might be a "good" mechanic in your area.....Mikes Auto....but he probably doesn't even know how to work on a Wheel Horse!!

PS: I have an extra steering wheel for ya..but you have to take what it is attached to....

nice save,gotta agree with duff,it would be sad to know how many get shredded,no metal guys in my area will let you but anything,ive offered 2 times the metal cost,which is still only 100 bucks a tractor and no go,insurance reasons,ya right

Mike, Yes you need to come up here and help me find that damn Oil Pump By Pass Plunger piston that I have lost! That is holding my engine rebuild up! Besides

its all yer fault I think on the way up from saint louie ya jarred something loose in that engine causing it to burn oil! Thats my story and Im stickin to it! :ychain:
