ce318 13 #1 Posted December 8, 2011 Just thought I would pass on my bargain hunting of the day. I went to the local Goodwill store today where I purchased a brand new pair of 9.50 x 16 tire chains with cross bars and a box of new cross links for $ 8.00 that was for both items. I then brought them home. I fitted them to the tires, cut to length then with the box of cross links. I completed set as 2 link chains. All for $ 8.00 dollars. So check out your local Goodwill stores mine had lots of tire chains and boxes and boxes of cross links mine even came with ice bars. This was an economical solution to the forty to sixty dollars at the parts store or Sears. Just wanted to share. Chris

bowtieguy 334 #4 Posted December 9, 2011 I used to buy auto tire chains at garage sales...NAPA sells a tool that will spread open and close shut the cross link thingy.....in about 30 minutes you can build a set of 2 link or 4 link chains....of course they are not nice and pretty like new sets, but the price is right...tool was 7.95...poor man has poor ways!!! IthacaJeff 151 #5 Posted December 9, 2011 Wow, never seen anything like that at our local Salvation Army store. . . but, I have found that ATV chains sell for much less than tractor chains even though they are the same. At the end of last winter I picked up a pair of 2-link V-bar chains for $25 and a modest shipping fee (if any, I cannot rightly remember). This in contrast to the $60-90 for the same style chains when purchased as "garden tractor" chains. I got them through an Ebay seller for ATV stuff. The sizing standards were different, so I had to figure out how the ATV tire sizes translated into my 23 x 8.5x12 for my tractor. Jeff in Enfield NY
ce318 13 #6 Posted December 9, 2011 Harbor freight and Walmart have chain pliers in small and medium size for 4.98 and 7.98 Harbor Freight has the truck chain pliers for 29.00 for the Lg pair. I like the lg because they work on every thing. As of now I have all three sizes. Yesterday I went and built 2 sets for the quad 4x4 cost me 10.00 and now the quad+blade+chains= monster snow removal. ce318 13 #8 Posted December 10, 2011 seen them on here but never in person. When I used to run lg Rotary blowers on Mt. Hood we had special chains from Sweden that were like cat tracks that were pretty cool.
