My Name Is Pete And I Have A Serious Addiction

Recommended Posts

DuchApl

A year ago I bought a broken down Wheel Horse C-100. It was just a taste. Now I'm hooked on Wheel Horse crack. I estimate that I've dropped about $4000 on this habit (wifey claims the new barn roof was just to keep the Horse dry). Before this addiction, the extent of my mechanical ability was changing oil, and I've never painted anything more than a living room wall. But you see, that's how it happens - anyone can get hooked. I SWEAR I was just going to paint the air cleaner cover. I'm a shell of my former self. I spend all my free time in the barn (sometimes I just stare at the Horse). I'm taking a small engine repair class this winter, and I'm thinking about learning how to weld.

My brother the ASE certified Master Auto Technician just laughs - he knows he got the mechanical gene. My mother was born and raised in South Bend, IN. Funny she never mentioned Wheel Horse - but then again, maybe she did - and my reaction to this infernal garden tractor is from somewhere deep in the subconscious. I can tell you this - If I buy one more part for this thing, wifey is going to slap me UNconscious. I can take it though. I've got the barn and the Horse. Let's see how she likes foot-long grass on the back acre.

Anyway, I'm kinda, sorta happy to be here - although I doubt seriously anyone is going help cure my addiction.

Yes it is a very addictive hobby and easy to go overboard if you have the room to do it. Luckily for me I only have room for 2 unless more is parked outside. I have justified to myself at least that I need everything I have which isn't much compared to most who frequent this wonderful place. If it wasn't for the nice folks here offering to help I wouldn't have gotten near as deep into the hobby as I am and trust me, I am just dangling my toes in the water. I haven't restored any but would like to some day. I have done several swaps, trades, trade ups and just fell into a few deals I couldn't pass up. As long as there is Red Square I doubt you will find a cure... I could think of a lot worse things to spend extra time/money... At least it keeps me home all be it in the garage when I am not spending time with the family...

I heard the addiction lessens after you acquire 100 of them but that may be an urban legend.

Welcome to Red Square...

Yes it can get bad, but I ran out of room at about 7 of them in a year & a half....

So I sold 4, and gave away one to my brothers grandson, now he is hooked.

I am down to my two favorites and starting all over. Ha!

Good thing is, this addiction won't send you to the Hospital, unless you runover yourself....

I think I have been bitten as well. This past summer I bought a good running Bronco 14 (as some of you know), and wasted no time tearing it down. I have always been big into disassembling and rebuilding stuff, so that came kinda natural. My dad is a mechanic, and I have always spent many ours out in the garage working under the hood.

Its nice to see some of the stuff my dad has taught me being put to good use. This winter will be my first small motor overhaul (a K90 / K91 blend) and will be put in an RJ-58, A.K.A. "Wheel Horse Number 2".

While I don't plan on having huge collection's like some of you guys, who knows what will happen. I am happy with the 2 I have now, although a few more can't hurt... Right? Right?

Oh, and by the way, I am only 22 years young, so I have many years of collecting & restoring these bad-boys ahead of me

Pictures? Ummmmm, perhaps, but i did say I had an addiction and not a talent. I'm still getting over the humbling feeling I get looking at some of the restorations here. So, I got one - 99 to go.

Pete, I got a kick out of your 1st post....my wife also got a good laugh.

Yes, I too started out with 1 tractor from my wife's nephew, and it has progressed to 5 now.

We had the family here for Thanksgiving and we had it in the "Horse barn", my wifes nephew was here and looking at the horses, and the wife said, "Matt, you are to blame for all these horses!"

As others have said, I could be doing something much worse!

Be not humbled, but Inspired by that greatness which lies at your feet. For within the claret halls of thine forum is wealth, understanding and knowledge no man could alone hold . Embodiment in the fraternity of Equestrian Roller shall paint thine soul with warmth and thine mind with clarity. And collectively the streets shall run red!

Flowers would only make wifey actually come out to the barn to see what's REALLY going on out here. OUT (way out) to dinner always works.

What? you expect me to come up with that twice in a row....LOL!

I figured someone would want it explained...never dreamed anyone would ask for more!

Haa!! Welcome to the club!! I justified a third garage bay addition as a work shop. I'll be posting pics of a new resto shortly . . . at least it'll keep ya off the porn :banana-tux:

Wait - re-thinking this whole thing. Did you say restoring a Wheel Horse means I have to give up porn?

Why Sam58, we're practically brothers. Spent a good deal of time in your neck of the woods - went to Marshall. And if you MUST know, the old girl tried to kill Me once. Sheared off a spindle bolt and flung the blade. Sounded like the world was coming to an end. Called up my crack dealer and ordered new bolts - which led to new bearings, which led to a new spindle shaft, which led to a new double "D" center pulley.

:text-yeahthat:

But honestly, I don't see the problem here. I'm at an age where I've given up almost all of my vices, at least most of the ones that could get me arrested. This one seems pretty harmless compared to a lot of other things I could be doing with my time.

And anyway, didn't Rooster say that we were all going to grow large feet and get rich and drink lots of wine and stuff? Or am I reading this wrong? :dunno:

Hmmm your story has a ring of familiarity but I just can't place it...

I can tell you that it is possible to reach the point where you wife will no longer be able to tell what you have and if you have gotten anything new. Once you reach a certain number of Wheel Horses and parts everything will starts to look the same to them.

An yup just enablers here...

I uh feel your pain... I live in a trailer park and am known as "the crazy tractor guy" right now I have two sheds containing 4 tractors one out back under a tarp makes 5... parts under the house to build 1 or 2 more.. makes 7....in storage are 5 more..... wow am I up to 12 now damn they must be breeding. There are parts and manuals in every room of the house, pictures on my phone, pictures, manuals, and prints on my computer at work, parts at work, parts in my truck, I had a blood test the other day and it was SAE 30

My ex wife said it was either her or the tractors and I don't miss her at all. My Fiance says we need a bigger place so I can buy more (god I love that woman)
