RJ-58 Paint Scheme Idea..... Input Wanted Please

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

So I have an RJ-58 that I will be restoring after my Bronco is done, and I already have tons of ideas running through my mind.

One idea I had for the paint scheme, was to do the whole tractor red like it's supposed to be, but do all the white stuff black. So the wheels, seat, etc would be black, and I would also do the engine & exhaust black. I would also do the "WHEEL HORSE" on the hood black as well.

I always liked the look of black & red together, and thought it would look really cool on an RJ.

So what do you guys think? Should I mix it up a little & do a black & red theme? Or should I stick with the traditional colors? I have no problem with the traditional colors, I just like black & red, and wanted to personalize it a little.

I know I am going to get at least one response that says "its your tractor, do what you want", but I am looking at the bigger picture. I know the RJ's aren't too plentiful, and wasn't sure if this type of "customization" would be highly frowned upon.

Thanks

I have a similar dilema as yourself , but i have a grey ferguson tractor that i would like to change around a little from its original colours.

I suppose some of the purests would say that you shopuld keep it in its orginal form , but like you said it would be good to give it a bit of individuality , So thats what i am intending to give my tractor.

I think its would be a crime to make the tractor look like something it isnt as i have often seen ie painting them john deere green when its clearly not a john Deere tractor.

So in my opinion providing its not to far from the original i think it would be ok to do something that you like the look of.

My only worry is that when & If you come to sell it wether it would affect its value or desirability.

That said, I still intend to paint my little grey fergie a different colour so that it matches my company work colours. good luck in your choice im sure that if the work is done well it would look good.

Ive seen some Rjs with black wheels & i really like it , I think the rj35s had black wheels

I personally think it will look good but do whatever YOU think looks good. There are no rules when it comes to what you do with your tractor. Some people shine them up and never use them. Others ride them hard and put them away wet. And some people drive them into ponds. To each is own.

  • I repainted my C125 Silver and Black. The purists will always say keep it original, but it's only paint. I got plenty of compliments because I had the decals done in the original style, just different colors. It looks like it could have really been Silver and Black from the factory.

Personally on restorations I believe it should only be changed if it helps the tractor to serve its original purpose better. Some of them had known issues, to do something to correct that issue is one thing. If you are restoring it and want the most value out of it, original is the way to go!

"its your tractor, do what you want",

If your goal is to make it yours, then that is the answer, or better yet..."You are the one that has to live with the decision. "

If the black makes you happy who cares who frowns on it, your smile is the one that matters!

Go with it! It's not irreversible and if you are happy with it then that's what it's all about.

Yup it's yours do as you please, there I said it, now color is a easy fix if you or someone else wants to make it orig. and your talking about the trim color that would be easy to change, you wouldn't even have to tear the tractor apart, and I think your wrong on not many RJs out there I bet we have many many of them on here some members have more than one, I had 4 at one time, but they are not my cup O tea, so I sold them, just don't cut up a good tractor.

I did this last summer for my daughter, and never had one person say anything bad about it.

These pics catch the color the best.

i like my horses a little brighter so somethat aren't I.H. red are massey harris - massey fergison red . note to niel my personal favorite fergy color combo is the 1956 metalic green with cream hood and fenders. 71 bronco, go ahead an do a black widdow spider web on the rj to remind you of the bronco when you got it!

Ken B did one of his 58 RJ's with black wheels and it looked great. I plan on doing my rat r8 with black wheels and seat. The rest will be red...

Hmmm maybe I can incorporate some kind of spider web into it.

I think I am going to do it. I wont be cutting or doing any permanent mods to change it, other then removing the lift handle (gonna keep it though in case I need or want it). The paint will be easy to change, should I want it back to original colors.

Thanks guys for the help!

Oh, and this RJ is gonna be in my ownership for a long time, I LOVE this tractor and with my little twist on the colors, I will be so happy with it :banana-tux:

EDIT: I think I am also going to go without the fenders & tool box, I kinda like the plain look without them.

Love that, only difference is mine will have a black motor as well, and a black seat pan, but no cover. Other than that, that's basically the tractor I want to build!

That color is awesome, I was thinking about that for my Raider 9 project...now I am sold!

And this exemplifies what I was saying, you were not going after a "Correct" restoration, you wanted to make it "Yours"..or in this case "Hers"...and you did that very well!

Some guys think that if they are not 100% original we are not "preserving" the heritage of the horse. I believe tractors like this and even the wild customs bring more interest into the hobby. The Hobby on the surface seems to be about the tractors, but in my mind it is about the people!

Beautiful tractor!!
