Question on Commando 8 Decals

Recommended Posts

rmaynard

I have noticed that there are two different style decals for the Commando 8. Since it was only available one year, 1968, why two different sets of decals?

This is what I have seen most often:

Then there is this:

I thought that too, but Commando Eight was available both '68 and '69.

I like the first set pictured the best Bob. :dunno:

I have seen that list too, but I have been unable to find any other reference to a 1969 version. No manual, no parts list, no reference to it at Toro Master parts viewer, etc..

The Commando that I am looking at has the second set of decals, and the ID number is 1-4831.

There was no Commando 8 garden tractor in 1969. (there was a Commando V8 though)

The second picture of the decals shown above are what is on my 1970 Commando V8 (model # 1-4851)

Every "original" 1-4831 1968 Commando 8 garden tractor I have seen has had the red & white decals just like the one in the first picture above.

Then we should edit our posted model # list to reflect this tractor as being a one year only offering. :dunno: :wh:

The bottom set are from European models produced in Belgium, they followed the same format as the early Raider models too.

The bottom set, European usage aside (correctness of that statement is unknown by me), appears to be from a 1972 Commando 800, which only adds to the confusion. At any rate, the correct set of a 1969 Commando 8 made in the US is:

Commando 800 tank tray decals would read "Commando 800".

Look above the left rear tire of my freebie Speedex and you can see the decals on my 1970 Commando 8 vert:

(they don't have the "V" - just the "8")

Ahh, the mystery continues. Original owner passed the tractor to his son. The grandson states that his father had the tractor repainted with Wheel Horse red from the dealer, and the decals that the dealer provided were the ones in the picture. Current owner (grandson) says that if his memory is correct, the original decals were the ones shown in the top picture, which would have been correct.

In any case, you know me, if I get the tractor, it will be returned to factory condition. :dunno:

I don't have any pics but my commando has the red decals like the top pic, now my 70 raider has decals like the bottom pic the gray and red stripe, i think like you said after the repaint they used what they had in stock probably.
