Proper adjustment of belt guides on C-141

Recommended Posts

My neighbor has converted his C-81 to a C-141. After reassembly, he cannot get the belt to stop driving the transmission input pulley. Since I don't have my C-101 any longer that I can reference, I would like to have a picture of the belt guides and their proper placement/adjustments relative to the drive pulley. I have a copy of the service manual, but it is quite vague, and the pictures are not clear. It says to bend the guides on the belt cover, top and bottom, but I know there are no guides on a C-1X1 belt cover.

My C-105 is 335 miles away at the moment, but I do have a C-series parts manual here, so I'm not totally shootin' in the dark....

There's an upper and lower belt guide, the upper one mounted to a bracket on the engine above the drive pulley, the lower one mounted directly to the block below that same pulley. There's no mention of the proper adjustment in that C-series parts manual, but my 310-8 parts/service manual specifies a 5/32" gap between each guide and the belt. I believe that's with the clutch engaged, but I'm not 100% sure. Also, the bracket for that upper guide is different for the C-81 than the C-141, don't know how that affects things for you.

Did you try PartsTree.com for a diagram?

If it's an 8-speed, are you sure the clutch idler pulley is engaging and disengaging as it should?

Thanks Ed. Idler is installed and adjusted correctly. I will take a look at a 300 series manual.

I think that because this is a cradle mount engine, there are other guides that may be missing. I haven't taken a look at the tractor since he started with the clutch problem, but I think that when I do, I will find a bracket missing or out of adjustment.

The thing that gets me is that Wheel Horse does not even mention the guides at the pulley in the manual. It refers to the tangs on the end of the belt guard.

I recently pulled the motor from a C-81 and installed into a 654. The motor had two belt guides bolted to it. They are just 1/4" rod "fingers" which bolt into the holes around the PTO and support the belt, top and bottom.

John, he has those. They are set at approximately 1/8" from the belt when the belt is tight.

That should do it then. He probably has a brand new belt which may need to be worn in a little. Drive it up to a sturdy wall and "wear it in". Can also try adjusting the finger guides out a little. Some of the new belts are kinda stiff and won't allow the guides to slack it enough around the pulley. The slack just stays out in the center area between the pulleys. The wall trick worked for me on one tractor but another one I had to play with for a while because the belt was just too stiff.
