WH Raider10 17 #1 Posted October 22, 2011 Hi, Is there somebody that ever put a briggs vanguard v-twin engine on a wheelhorse? I'm maybe going to do this with a 16hp v-twin,so has any of you some pics and is the engine replacement easy? It should replace an onan 16hp. :wh:
Kelly 1,030 #2 Posted October 22, 2011 I know a member here has done it, and a local guy near me has one on his puller.
TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #3 Posted October 22, 2011 I mounted an 18hp Vanguard twin to a C-85 just as an experiment & so I could hear it run. I happened to use a riser plate from a GT-1100 WorkHorse, but you could always make up your own riser/adapter plate. My particular engine needs both a ground wire to kill the spark, plus a "hot" wire (while the key is in the "start" & "run" positions) to open the fuel shut-off solenoid at the carb. I used the original C-85 engine pulley on the B&S 1" crankshaft, along with all of the PTO clutch pieces. I took it back apart before it was completely finished, but I can tell you that it had plenty of power! :dunno:

Don1977 604 #5 Posted October 23, 2011 Here is mine. The biggest problem is most Vanguards have a 1" crank shaft. I had my Pulley bored sleeved to 1" and added a sleeve under the PTO sleeve to make it work. To raise the base I used a 3/8" plate raised on two 1/2" x 1 1/2" bars. I used the same drive belt as the pulley is in the same place as original. On a C-Series with the high tank mount you have to saw a hole in the gas tank mount and remove the tank to change plugs. I have upgraded to an 18 Vanguard the old 16 gave up after 20 years.

kpinnc 13,106 #7 Posted October 24, 2011 I did it too. I used a 14 horse on my 520-H. Pretty impressive engines in my book. This 14hp with a 48-inch deck runs circles around my 518-H with a 42-inch deck, and does so without even a grunt:
