Buckshot 1 15 #1 Posted October 11, 2011 :thumbs2: Before aquiring this tractor, it sat outside in the rain/snow for a couple of years no cover. I am going to drain and flush the trans. (5053). My book says to use approximately 3 pints of SAE 40 oil when re-filling. Am I correct in assuming (I know) this is non-detergent oil. :thanks for your time. Any crud will settle to the bottom as opposed to floating around in the gears and bearings. 40W was specified in your transmissions and a few others (Lawn Rangers, etc..) as I recall, but you can use regular gear oil. 80 to 90W will be fine. SousaKerry 501 #4 Posted October 12, 2011 I run full synthetic gear oil in my 655 so far no problems, but I did rebuild the trannny and put in all new modern seals, some of the older seals may not be compatible with the synthetic. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
kpinnc 12,464 #5 Posted October 12, 2011 At worst Don, it may leak some. You can replace every seal in the tranny for around $20, and you can get the seals from NAPA auto (Oriely's). You don't even have to split the case to do it. Just remove the hubs, pulley, and brake drum. Pick the old seals out with an o-ring pick, press new ones in with PVC pipe or something similar. Buckshot 1 15 #7 Posted October 17, 2011 :banghead: Warm her up and drained the trans. Some nasty looking stuff came out, surprisingly no water. Put in a qt. of diesel fuel and took her for a spin. drained again. Diesel fuel was a little dirty but no grit. Used 80w90 to re-fill. Installed new shifter boot/dust cover.
