Lane Ranger 10,946 #1 Posted October 9, 2011 I have a 42 inch Sickle Bar Mower (SMS-425) tht I need to replace three broken knives on . I have some new replacement knives but need to find a rivet to fit the knife blade. The original rivet was part #1071 (thanks to Tom Flynn for the info). Partstree says it is no longer available. I went to the local TSC today and they have no rivets small enough to go in the knife hole. Suppose to be a flat rivet, steel and about an 8th to 3/16th round and maybe no more than a half to 3/8 long. Here is the knife blade in the sickle bar mower and you can just about see the rivets: Here are three new blades and I just noticed one of the blades has larger rivet holes and I think I have a few more like this one: Any guidance on a replacement rivet would be appreciated! :thumbs2:
mavfreak 11 #2 Posted October 9, 2011 just a guess but can you cut the new rivet down to the right length or does tsc not have the right diameter
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #3 Posted October 9, 2011 Round head rivet ~ 3/16" diameter X 1/2" long. (I have a few spares for my SMS mower) Grainger has them - if you don't mind a package of 165. :thumbs2:

buckrancher 2,679 #9 Posted October 10, 2011 Actually the rivet is a 7/32" dia x 1/2" (.218 x .500) NOT 3/16" sorry TT and good luck finding them Brian I found a source for 7/32" x 1/2" looks like $6.00 per 100pcs I'll get the web site info and post it http://www.rivetsinstock.com/rivet67.htm
mavfreak 11 #10 Posted October 10, 2011 where would a rivet fit on a moose? I'm going to look at work tommorrow and see if the rivet size that holds the ring gear on the drive hub of a toro spartan/reelmaster are the same size. They look close. If they are you could odear them from toro or aftermarket
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #11 Posted October 10, 2011 sorry TT No need to apologize..... I measured the spare rivets that came with my SMS-425 & although it's not used often, they've been holding the knives tight on my mower for years. Edit: I found several sources for the 7/32" rivets and will check them out in the very near future. :banghead:
71_Bronco 1,072 #12 Posted October 10, 2011 If someone is really in a bind and cannot get these rivets, I might be able to machine a few up. Not to long ago, my dad was rebuilding the window assembly for his '64 Falcon. One of the little aluminum rivets dropped off the bench and into the black-hole, and we couldn't find it. I had to machine up a new one at work, cause he didn't have time to wait for a pair of special order rivets to come in. Soooo.... if someone is in dire need, I might be able to make a few if people absolutely need them. Of course, I would need a dimensioned print of the parts though. Although, from the sound of it, it looks like the rivets are available.

mavfreak 11 #14 Posted October 10, 2011 I looked up R&R Products for the rivets I metioned above and there 5/16 x3/4. Sorry
VinsRJ 721 #15 Posted October 10, 2011 I actually found it easier to just weld new tips to the knives... shape and sharpen. Unless you plan on using it a lot...... Haven't had an issue with mine.
