Marv 966 #1 Posted October 2, 2011 K series engines: Some starters have ten tooth pinion gears. Some have thirteen teeth. I have a K321 engine and need to replace the starter. I mated a 10 tooth starter to the engine and manually meshed the pinion to the flywheel. The mesh was very good. I did the same with a 13 tooth and it meshed well too.. My question, does it really matter how many teeth the starter has?
rmaynard 15,927 #2 Posted October 3, 2011 I have three K-241S engines. One has a 13 tooth starter, the other two have 10 tooth. Both work fine. The only difference is that the 13 tooth starter turns the engine over faster.
Kelly 1,030 #3 Posted October 3, 2011 They will all interchange as Bob said, but I have had to shim the 13 tooth starter on a few to make them not whine when cranking, I used a modified chevy starter shim.
