Odd crunching sound?

Hi all.

When I engage my 227-5 and operate it sounds like there is a dry 'crunching' sound from the tranny. According to the manual, these are pre-packed with grease and don't require lubricant replacing?

Has anyone any ideas? The sound is present when I release the clutch pedal put not when pressed. It is constant during operation.

Sounds like it could be the input shaft bearings.

With the engine off & the clutch pedal depressed (so drive belt is loose) try to wiggle the large pulley on the top of the transaxle.
