Recommended Posts

Heres the 854 I picked I rebuilt the starter generator myself then finally put some gas in her & she runs greats. I took her to the carwash to get the grease & grime off before dismantle.

Then I pulled her in the garage and started tearing her apart.

This being my first restore I was surprise how simple this was to take apart. Once I got it all apart and the nuts and bolts labelled it was time to clean up.

Well I am going to have to stick with the bass tracker seat until one of you guys sell me an original, or I might trade the boat seat for one LOL.

got her loaded up for another trip to the car wash.

I am wanting to buy all new nuts & bolts I was thinking either stainless or maybe nickel, or zinc plated. What have you all found to be best? :woohoo:

Man I see all these 854s getting a redo, I want to start mine!!!!!

I'm gonna go with stainless. This won't get used hard, mostly as a snow blower and maybe pulling a cart or something. Stainless isn't super strong, less than a grade I believe. Something shiny would look good!!!

Check out this thread.

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=30154

It lists a couple places to get a hardware list for your tractor and places to buy.

FYI, Kelly got all new SS hardware for a 857 from Fasteral for $75

Good luck on the Resto, Refurb, Repaint or whatever it's called.

Here is the rolling chassis cleaned up. I spent some time today pulling all the sheetmetal off of the engine, I decided that I am going to order a new gasket kit just incase, sure would hate for a oil leak to ruin the new paint.

Looking good so far. I picked up a new seat on fleabay. It is certainly not an original seat, but brand new for $13 plus shipping. Cant beat it. It looks alot like a pan seat from an old 8N. Take a look they are worth the money.

I'm liking the pics. Keep them coming. I hope you didn't get any chew marks in the sheet metal from your helper! :woohoo:

lots of PB Blasters and a pair of large hammers for the exhaust and/or any old pipe threads, soak the threads with blasters then take your larger hammer and back up the pipe fitting/45/elbow and hit the other side with the other large hammer, no love taps allowed, you are trying to distort or temporarly eggshape the fitting to loosen the threads, then use pipe wrenches to remove the pipe from the fitting, if the muffler doesn't come off of the pipe just buy a new piece of black pipe at the big box store.

Thanks to the good advice I was able to bolt the engine to the chassis and then remove the old muffler and it was worn out just a hollow shell.

All of my parts came in today so I hurried home after work and cracked the motor open to inspect and change all the gaskets. To my surprise the engine was very with little signs of wear, the po bought it new and was pretty particular about maintenance. I would say that the engine has been rebuilt as all of the gaskets were fairly new looking.

I hope the tranny looks as good inside as the engine does.

I put it all back together & added a coat of primer. Still looking for a seat if anyone wants to sell one pm me please

Finally had a little more time to work on the horse.

Drained 3/4 a coffee can of clean water out of the tranny with a few drops of oil coming out last.

I think I am going to clean it out for now since it works & I am planning on swapping this tranny out for a speed that will fit.

I pulled the hubs & axle seals they gave no trouble at all.

Caleb I try and go stainless with everything I replace except something that requires

grade 8. Like on ly snow chucker all bolts will be SS. Looking good by the way. :dunno:

I did my last B-100 with all stainless steel. I found the best source was http://www.BoltDepot.com. There, you can buy as few as one piece, not packs of 10 or 100. The price was fair also.

:dunno: Very nice job. If it were me, I would get the paint off the head, as paint holds heat and might give you some trouble down the road. Just my 2 cents. :wh:

Another update: I ordered my axle seals today, should be here in the morning.

I filled the trans axle up with diesel & run through all the gears. I hope this will break up any gunk in there, I will let it sit a day or two. Got my wheels prepped & the first coat of primer on. I am going to run ag tires on the rear but am caught between tri-ribs and ags for the front. Decision decisions...

Here is an update on the engine, its all finish except I still need to rebuild the carb.

The 854 is looking good. I'd go with tri ribs up front, it looks better in my opinion and it will ride much smoother.

Snuck out into the shop for a few minutes of fun tonight.

Worked on prepping the frame & tranny for primer & separated the two.

Sanded the wheels & shot another coat primer on them.

Hopefully I will be able to get everything washed & primed this weekend.

2011-11-10_21-12-23_852.jpg

I need some help on this one, I have the original dust caps for the front wheels.

I see that mine are white underneath the red & one has the horses head on it. My tractor was repainted in the past so I dont know which color was original.

I have seen them both red & white on restores & I am not surewhich is correct.

just a quick note if you use stainless fastners besure to put a dab of grease or anti-seze on the threads before assemby

as stainless on stainless can weld it's self together :dunno:
