WH854 44 #1 Posted August 10, 2011 I have a C-165 auto I am thinking about making it an 8 speed!! Automatic is handy for some things, but not for others, for instance you have to keep adjusting the lever all the time, ties up one hand. My place is not level I have to slow down going down hill, speed up going up hill. that is just one idea. an 8 speed you put it in gear and you don't have to fuss with it untill you want to change gears. I have every thing to change it over, mechanical lift, 8 speed transmission , break pedal, break rods, shift plate for 8 speed, dash plate for 8 speed, deck adjuster quadrant, break spring, idler arm and pully setup. Have I left any thing out? Any one have any ideas or remarks on the subject? Also any advise. Chas
Dockfishin 51 #2 Posted August 10, 2011 Sounds like a good excuse to buy another one or maybe get the foot pedal set up for it?
WH854 44 #3 Posted August 10, 2011 Sounds like a good excuse to buy another one or maybe get the foot pedal set up for it? Don't have room for another one, that foot pedal setup would cost more than the tractor. :D
Road-Track 39 #4 Posted August 10, 2011 DOC in Kentucky makes the reproduction 8-3900 hydro pedal attachments. It must be cheaper and less work than a conversion? Here is the pedal set-up on my C145. Attached Image
WH854 44 #5 Posted August 10, 2011 DOC in Kentucky makes the reproduction 8-3900 hydro pedal attachments. It must be cheaper and less work than a conversion? Here is the pedal set-up on my C145. I have all the parts to convert it to an 8 speed. That foot pedal will run close to $400.00 to put on ( just a guess) that has been mentioned on here before. Thanks anyway Besides I have a lot of time anyway Chas

pfrederi 17,634 #9 Posted August 11, 2011 Engine pulley is different also I believe. (or did you include that in your idler statement?) Also you mention brakes twice but I didn't see clutch pedal and linkage.
kpinnc 11,866 #10 Posted August 11, 2011 Engine pulley is different also I believe. Yes it is, but he'll have to buy a new belt regardless. We've all seen folks trade out larger pulleys up front to make tractors faster, so finding a belt to work should not be an issue. It's possible that you'll get a fairly quick 8-speed tractor from that setup, and 16 hp will be plenty strong enough to handle it. Good luck!

WH854 44 #16 Posted August 18, 2011 Well I got the old girl changed over to an 8 speed But when I got on her and fired her up. I tried to put her in gear, there was a grinding of gears. What the %$#@ You have to push the clutch in you jerk So I pushed on the clutch Put her in reverse and backed her out of the shed. Put the Hi-Lo in low hmm That works! Put it back in hi third down the drive way I went lickety Split. pushed in on the break pedal slide both back wheels They work Too I said. So I fooled around checking all the gears out no jumping out of gear. All in All turned out today was a good day for me Hey Steveasarus thank you for the tutoral on uni-drive transmissions I have some pictures of the finished project This goes to show you if you put your mind into the jobyou can do it. zieg72 209 #19 Posted August 20, 2011 Nice, I almost did that to a 520H but decided against it. I would have kept the larger pulley on the engine but that is just me... Turned out great!!!

RJR49 129 #23 Posted April 25, 2012 He must not have a snow blower or he never would have gotten rid of the hydro lift
bo dawg 516 #24 Posted April 25, 2012 Good job!! Nice looking tractor too, I like it! I myself would rather mow with a hydro it is easier for trimming around all my dag blasted trees and everything else. I mowed to day with my recent 8 speed find and its ok, don't get me wrong, but having to change from reverse to forward kind of sucks. Plus for me 2nd gear is too slow and 3rd too fast. So cut in 3rd with clutch push in some to slow it down a bit which is more of a hassle then keeping hand on hydro lever. But it's a blast to use over all and has its purposes. Just my thoughts :confusion-shrug:
WH854 44 #25 Posted May 5, 2012 He must not have a snow blower or he never would have gotten rid of the hydro lift Well mate i am not a 98LB weakling, and I do have a snow blower with an assist spring Chas
