tarcoleo 119 #1 Posted August 5, 2011 About 10-pinion differentials, 1-1/8" axles, and 8- speed trans.- are the C-series WH's the only machines with all three features? Tom in RI :woohoo:
racinfool40 202 #2 Posted August 5, 2011 Tom alot of the raiders also had the 10 pinion tranny's. I'm still tryin to learn about all the 6-8 speed transmissions the 5060 and the 5073 in the raiders were 10 pinions 1 1/8 axle and I may be wrong but I thought the c-series came with the 8 pinion 1 1/8 axle tranny's here's the one's I know that were 8 pinion tranny's 5091 103907 103916 103918 and as far as the difference in each tranny ya got me!!! Theirs also a service bulletin some were that shows how to switch a 10 pinion tranny over to and 8 pinion tranny but I've yet been able to find it!! I hope this helps a little if not I'm sure someone with a little more knowledge than me will chime in! :woohoo:
tunahead72 2,432 #3 Posted August 6, 2011 Tom, I'm curious about this also, so I hope you don't mind me asking what I think is a related question, from a complete novice on these transmissions: Are the 10-pinion differentials necessarily more "rugged" than the 8-pinions? Thanks for letting me cut in! :woohoo:
can whlvr 993 #4 Posted August 6, 2011 not all c series have the 10 pinipn, none of mine do and i have 4 c,s,and i dont think they are stronger than the 8 pinion, the mecanism the makes it a posi in the 10 pinion seems to wear out,and then its not posi, and dont quote me but i think the pinions are smaller in the 10 and there fore not as strong as the
TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #5 Posted August 6, 2011 The 10 pinion "Trans-Power" differentials were only used from 1967 to sometime in 1973. (at least in the USA models) The 8 pinion is stronger than the 10 pinion. In addition to the pinions being smaller (and hollow), the ring gear is weakened because it is "keywayed" in four places for the pinion carrier halves. See for yourselves : Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy: Hefty, hefty, hefty : Here's the comparison photo of the 8 pinion assembly vs. the early 10 pinion assembly. (aluminum end caps were used in the #5060 tranz)
