Powder-Coating Wheels?

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

I was looking at my Bronco last night, at the wheels specifically. I am going to be re-doing them, and was going to just paint them. Then I thought, what if I powder-coated them. Give them a stronger finish and will last longer then paint.

I want to do them a charcoal color to match the color of the stripe I am doing down the hood of my bronco, and then they will have the chrome hub-caps.

So what do you guys think? Just prep and paint? Or would powder-coat be a wiser investment?

I'd like to do the same on my 1800, in WH red. The cost is the issue. I know for my brother in law to sand blast them it's $50 a bag for the sand, and then I'd have to pay a powder coater big money. I'm thinking I'll try to sand them and just rattle can them. Mine is a working tractor so powder coating really probably won't last as long as I pay for it.

About a year ago a buddy of mine bought the cheap powder coating system at harbor freight for around $80. He then went to a used appliance store and picked up an old oven for around $50 to put in his shop. Then he started to powder coat 4 wheeler parts that he produced. He got fairly good results, but in this case I think you may have a hard time matching the colors you want. I recently bought a cheap sandblasting cabinet for around $200, so if you look at it for roughly $350 you could possibly do any part on the tractor yourself. I don't know if I would try this, but it is food for thought. :woohoo:

Very true. Of course my issue is space.

I've powdercoated all of the wheels for both of my tractors. I liked the better durability for when I was mounting the tires. Powdercoaters will usually charge by the batch, so the price isn't too bad.

I was going to ask you about those in your thread. I didn't realize they were powder coated. I just figured you sprayed them.

It's kind of hard to tell from the pics. What is the color they used called? Chrome? Polished aluminum?

They look mint and the price is great.
