panyaguas 14 #1 Posted July 31, 2011 Hello, I have a tractor that I am trying to figure out if it is a true Wheel Horse 500 Special. Does anybody know a website that I can find information on the serial numbers? The serial number on this tractor is 501944 Any help would be greatly appreciated. sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted July 31, 2011 I collected a bunch of serials off 500 Specials a while ago, trying to work out a pattern to some of the differences in these tractors. 501994 is definately within one of the "blocks" of serials that I have recorded. Gene (Haasman35) has 501791 and there is a guy I dont know ("Engineman76") on Wheelhorse.org that has 501989 which is very close to yours. As a wild guess, I would say that yours shouldnt have the cut-out for headlamps, and probably has the deep dished steering wheel. It may or may not have had the "6" above the checkered flag on the decals. Here is a pic of a reasonably original one that I used to own:
panyaguas 14 #4 Posted August 1, 2011 Thanks for all of the help. Mine does have the 6 above the flags and it does not have the cut out for the headlights. Instead it has a nice stick on Wheel Horse decal/plate. This is in pretty good shape actually. I have had it for a little while now. I am currently working on restoring my 754. Hammerhead 817 #5 Posted August 1, 2011 My 500 Special has the Model Number of 1-3631 and Serial Number 490590. Is that in your number zone Kiwi? I think I saw your list a while back and my number was in the range of numbers you had. Good idea on this Sorekiwi. I'd like to do this with every year tractor that WH made, it would take awhile though! It also has the 6 above the crossed flags and the plastic escutcheon plate on the front of the hood where the head lights would go. WH converted some recoil only start Tecumseh engines, into electric start engines. So you could possibly have a set of head lights if it got converted by a WH Dealer back in the day. Here's some paperwork I have collected over the years, it shows the price of the electric start engine at $599.95 and w/o starter is $529.95. Alot of cool info here! This is all the paper work on the 500 Special that you got when you bought a 500 Special! This paper work is not from my 500 Special so there is one more Serial Number for your records Sorekiwi... sorekiwi 761 #6 Posted August 1, 2011 I'd like to do this with every year tractor that WH made, it would take awhile though! Gary ( gwest_ca) has already done it - in one of his yahoo groups is a database of serial numbers and tractor models. It's really quite interesting to look at. The list is by no means complete, but you can see where a run of 500 Specials was made, and then say a run of Charger 9's and then a run of something else. Worth a look if you have some time to spare!
