TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #26 Posted July 21, 2011 very nice Terry great find!! What is the pulley and jack shaft setup for by the footpegs? Brian Not really sure yet, Brian. I suspect it's for a powered attachment. It was just laying loose on the frame when I picked the tractor up. It looks familiar, but I'll have to get a few pictures of it by itself to see if someone can help jog my memory. Thanks to Dustin, Jason, & Eric V. for the positive ID of this assembly. It's the jackshaft found on the very first mower decks used on the RJ-35 models.
boovuc 1,090 #27 Posted July 21, 2011 Nice find, TT. Laying hands on that model in that condition and that complete is a rarity. It's in good hands! BooVuc Mill Hall, PA
rj35hunter 283 #28 Posted July 22, 2011 Nice Find! If you get a chance, post the serial #'s off the clinton engine so I can compare to mine. I am trying to put together a "time line" of original RJ35's by their engine #'s. I have one with that same aluminum steering wheel and I'm curious to see how close our engine numbers are. One more thing, what color do you think the front wheels were originaly? They look like they were silver to me. Thanks! Clay

Clay Hi Clay, I recently got a copy of "Straight From The Horses Mouth" The book says the front rims remained their original color of silver on the 1955 models. The author says that the first 100 had the 10" cast aluminum steering wheel. Also mentioned is that the first hoods were Fiberglas, but after about 100 were produced it was switched to steel. So you would think that with an aluminum steering wheel you would most likely have a Fiberglas hood as well. I don't think I have ever seen one with a Fiberglas hood. However, I haven't been so interested in the older horses until recently. Nice find TT :D

'56 are silver inside & black on the outside. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No comment on the credibility/accuracy of the contents of "the book". :woohoo:
can whlvr 993 #31 Posted July 23, 2011 man thats a really nice find, ive only seen one guy up here that even owns round hoods, hes got about 8 of them,he buys them all up,looks like you have a few horses laying around, looks like you need a few motors like me :woohoo:
rj35hunter 283 #32 Posted July 23, 2011 TT, you won't believe this but our tractors are only 8 numbers different on the engine serial numbers! My tractor is an original cable steer with the cable still on it and working. It also has the original aluminum steering wheel exactly like yours. Yours had to be a cable steer as well that has been converted. Its funny too how yours has the normal wheels on the front and mine has the two-piece bolt together style. I have some pictures showing your ID plate and mine side by side and what my tractor looks like. I would have to say that our tractors were built side by side? Thanks for sharing that info, Clay
rj35hunter 283 #33 Posted July 23, 2011 Mr. Pipes, in my opinion only early to mid 55 tractors had silver wheels on the front. I think later 55's went to black on front. I have a late 55 with the push button kill switch that has the original black wheels on the front. I also have an early 55 with an engine serial number of 3125161, which is one of the two earliest I have seen and they both have steel hoods. I haven't heard of a 55 RJ with a fiberglas hood yet or talked to anyone that has seen one either. :D

Kelly 1,029 #37 Posted July 23, 2011 Clay, I didn't realize that serial numbers of the engine date in what order they come off the line? Cheers ~Duke I don't think they would be in the order of the serial no. but they probably got the engines in one load, so it is safe to say the tractors were built at about the same time, I'd guess with in a month or so. Wim 0 #38 Posted July 23, 2011 Hi guys, sorry to ask something completely different, but could it be that the part in the picture belongs to a wheel horse? seeing the previous pictures it looks to me the rear tires part.
Kelly 1,029 #39 Posted July 23, 2011 I'm going to say no. but the deck mount and belt guard are.

VinsRJ 721 #41 Posted July 24, 2011 Clay, My original RJ35 with Clinton is serial number 4652851 and model is 1200. I know this one is all original! Can you date the engine? Steve, from what I can tell from my paper work it would be 1955. Whats the complete model number..... 1200 ???
jst1more 40 #42 Posted July 24, 2011 I find it kind of interesting with everyone posting the Clinton engine serial numbers of their early rj-35s. It was hard for me to get a good pic because my variable speed pulley was in the way. I wonder how many engines Elmer and Cecil would order early on? My model number is:1200 152 My serial number is:3236050 A My rj-35 was an original cable steer. Scott NW, Indiana
71_Bronco 1,072 #43 Posted July 24, 2011 Now that is just cool. I love that style of tractor, so pretty. I also really like the natural "patina" on it.

rj35hunter 283 #45 Posted July 25, 2011 Clay, My original RJ35 with Clinton is serial number 4652851 and model is 1200. I know this one is all original! Can you date the engine? Steve, I can not date the engine because as far as I know there is no documentation. I can say that your serial # is higher than both of my 56's, but lower than my 57. My 56's are 3729339 & 4068228. My 57 is 5028920. That is the only facts I have right now, but does kinda lead to believe yours is a 56 for sure. I hope this helps you out. By the way Steve, what is the rest of the #'s off the engine plate......I'm thinking 1200 2184 B?
