skinne44 0 #1 Posted July 12, 2011 I am working on tightening up the front end on my D 180 and it looks like there is a bushing that goes up inside the bottom of the front axle for the spindle to wear on, the parts diagram shows a thrust bearing but this looks like it goes up in an inch or so. I tried getting it out but it will not budge, soaking in PB blaster as I type this. Anyone have any expierience with this, thanks.
dgoyette 12 #2 Posted July 12, 2011 The thrust bearing should be just a little wider than the bushings and does not go up that far. Do you have a picture?
skinne44 0 #3 Posted July 13, 2011 I do not have a picture but I did get a better look at it today and it appears thathere is no replacable bearing up inside the axle. I am thinking of drilling it out to accept a bushing to take the slop out. Any suggestions.
wheeledhorseman 575 #4 Posted July 15, 2011 I too would be interested in any views or expeirence on refurbishing very sloppy spindle / axle bearings which seem to be just steel on steel. Re drilling out and bushing, I considered this but the eliptical wear top and bottom will cause problems in getting a drill to follow the original path of the hole through the axle. I'm thinking that I'll have to get the work done for me at an engineering workshop where they would be able to bore rather than drill an oversized hole to take a bushing. Anyone got any easier / cheaper solutions out there?
Trouty56 567 #5 Posted July 15, 2011 I have some pictures somewhere that are of a kingpin designed assembly for the front end. The pin was held in place by removing the grease zerk and adding a set screw so the pin was non-moveable. There was a bushing on the top and a thrust bearing/bushing on the bottom. There was a 4 bolt wheel installed on a 1 inch axle. If I dig up the pics I will post them. They looked great but the guy wanted 300 buck for a set...but I have some pretty detailed pics. This is what I did to mine Also made new spindles.
