Hydrostatic Trans Question, Oil Related

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

I am going to be changing the fluid in the hydrostatic trans of my 71 Bronco. I want to get the right oil / fluid, as well as the correct filter for it.

Does anybody have the filter part number?

Also, the manual says to use "Dexron or Type F Hydrostatic Oil, Wheel Horse Part Number 8827"

Should I use the Type F stuff? and is it even still available?

Thanks

Pull the dipstick and put some oil on your finger. If it's red use regular ATF, brown use 10w 30. If you ever want to change from ATF to 10w30 the system including hydralics needs to be flushed.

Always use Wheel Horse filters (NOT aftermarket) as they are built WITHOUT the relief valve commonly found in auto filters and will cause the tractor to stop moving if a tiny hole in them becomes plugged w/debris.

I have a small leak on one of my Hydrolic hose fittings, and it is a red fluid, so I am guessing it is the Dexron, or ATF fluid. I have some of the "ford" branded trans fluid, as my family drives fords, so if I use this, it should be fine I would guess, right?

As to the filter, I will be using a Wheel Horse filter. I am trying to put together a list of parts & part numbers so that the guy behind the counter has to do little thinking to get my stuff, So I still need to figure out the Wheel Horse part number.

A Napa 1410 hyd filter DOES NOT have the relief valve and is a direct cross to the WH #. It's what's on my C 160. About 1/2 the price too. Top quality filter made by Wix.

Thats good to know. I have a NAPA right down the street from my work, actually, I can go the senic route and drive right past it on the way home.

When I get to NAPA, and I look at the filter, is there any way to tell if it has a relief valve, or do I have to just trust that it is okay?

Thanks!

They should have an industrial/heavy duty filter book there. In the back you can look up any filter and get dimensions, thread sizes, ect on any filter. It will list wether there is a by pass relief or not. If they don't have the book, they should be ashamed of them selves or they don't have much ag/ hd business. I worked at a Napa for 10 yrs and we sold thousands of hd filters. I kept the book for myself when the catalog updates came like every 3 yrs. My Napa Pro Link web page only lists the sizes and micron rating which is 25. You have to go to the book. Mike

Okay, cool. I will grab that filter, and then ask them to look it up just to make 100% sure.

Thanks!

In the beginning there was Dexron (GM and Chrysler) and Mercon (Ford).

They now make a "Universal" ATF that substitutes for both up through about version 3 I believe. A few years ago Ford changed the specs for Mercon (Mercon 5 I believe) and it is not interchangeable with Dexron.

Bottom line if your family has old Fords you might be OK but ot be safe I would get Dexron or the universal stuff.

You won't be dissapointed with the NAPA 1410, like squonk says.

the original type F trans fluid had friction modifiers in it and it IS NOT compatable with other trans fluids or hydrostatic transmissions, use at your own risk.
