transmission help needed

When i try to put my tractor (1973 8hp 4 speed, 1-0120) in gear it grinds a little but still goes into gear and runs fine after that. Kinda like the not pushing in the clutch pedal all the way on a car and it grinds alittle. I just changed the idler pulley on it and it never did this before. so i dont know if i just didn't get everything back correctly or somethings a little off or what. any help or suggestions would be great thanks alot guys

Be sure that the belt is riding on the belt guide that is welded to the inside of the belt cover. If it isn't riding on that guide, it will not completely release from the engine pulley, thereby causing the trans input pulley to continue to turn when shifting in / out of gears.

As a 2nd matter... EVERY GEAR you move in should be from an absolutely DEAD STOP. That is, DO NOT shift on-the-move as if you had a synchromesh transmission. There is enough engine power to start from DEAD STOP in every gear, as described in the tractor owner's manual(s). Shifting from gear to gear while on the move will yield a very short-term life experience for your transmission....'nuff said

i never shift unless im completely stopped. i'll check and make sure the belt is riding on the belt guides. hopefully thats all it is and everything will be good. thanks for the help

Sounds like your belt is kind of sticking in that new pulley. Is the belt in good shape? Maybe wipe that new pulley with a "little" WD-40 in the groove and see if that is better. Just needs a little wearing in. :woohoo:

i adjusted my belt guard a little and did what Steve said and it solved the problem. thanks for the help guys its greatly appreciated.
