JUSS10 250 #1 Posted June 18, 2011 well my dad used to have one of those nelson tractor sprinklers but the newer models had a lot of plastic bits and pieces so it finally bit the dust. he's talked about getting an older one for a while so i thought that could be a fun project, so off to craigslist i go and i picked up this older one with cast wheels that the seller said was a good 25 years old. kept it in my car last night and while my dad was at work i tore it apart, cleaned it up, and gave it some new paint this morning. Showed it to him this afternoon, i think he really liked it. this is what it started as (red with black wheels) and this is how it looks now!
DoctorHfuhruhurr 137 #2 Posted June 18, 2011 Nice!!! Now that's my kind of restoration (quick). I just wasted 20 minutes watching various youtube video's on them. I don't know why but I'm fascinated by it LOL.
JUSS10 250 #3 Posted June 18, 2011 they are pretty neat, I've seen john deer ones but never an international harvester (my dad used to be an IH mechanic) so i thought it would really make his day. its kind of a bummer its modeled after a john deere (the overall shape) but its the colors that count! Horse'n Around 22 #5 Posted June 19, 2011 Those are so cool, I have a friend in AZ that has a few of them , Ive been trying to talk him into parting with one. Actually about 3 months before we moved here he told to to take which ever one I wanted to but he was had been drinking... heavily. So I decided to wait till he said I could take one when he was sober..I'm still waiting but I think I'm wearing him down I call him every couple of weeks just to say hi and catch up on "stuff" and I can always tell when hes been drinking because he calls me Dorothy (his wife's name) Lately hes been calling me Dorothy a lot Needless to say I haven't got him to part with one yet but when I do I'm going to send my 10yr old nephew over to snag it for me, that is unless my nephew graduates from HS before then Your tractor sprinkler looks great, in this picture it kind of looks like the trailer is hooked up to it John

AMC RULES 37,141 #9 Posted June 19, 2011 I guess i assumed a lot of people have seen these things cause everyone in the family has always had one. they are super cool thats for sure! Justin I do remember from when I was a kid, but don't have any memory of seeing one in action. Do the work well, as far as travel and actually put water on the lawn? :hide:
Horse'n Around 22 #10 Posted June 19, 2011 You really did do a great job on it. That would be the perfect Fathers Day gift for sure! I remember seeing them used as 5 or 6. I could be wrong but if I remember right the hose attaches to the read of the sprinkler and it straddles the hose with the front wheel since its water powered it follows the hose right ? Our neighbor had one and it seemed to work really good. I was fascinated by it ,I distinctly remember wanting one for a toy to play in the dirt with. I remember I called them helicopter tractors Now here I am 40+ years later and I still want one... some things never change. John
JUSS10 250 #11 Posted June 19, 2011 they do an excellent job of watering the lawn. like john said you run your hose across the lay, this becomes the guide for the front wheel. at the end of the hose loop it forward, set the tractor on the hose with the front wheels over the hose, the water is turned on, the sprinkler bars spin and have a worm gear on the T fitting in the gear box, this worm gear spins a series of other gears in the gear box which it turn the rear wheels, it has a high, low and neutral setting. the tractor is actually quite powerful as it ends up pulling the hose as it travels. they are really quite cool. this model is the newer kind, there is an older one that really doesn't look like a tractor but all the gears are exposed so its pretty cool to watch, my grand father has one like this. Redbirdman 7 #12 Posted June 19, 2011 John: I can always tell when hes been drinking because he calls me Dorothy (his wife's name) Lately hes been calling me Dorothy a lot Ya better watch the movie 'Deliverance' before you go over there.John ........... I remember selling those tractor sprinklers way back in the late 50's before the John Deere hood model.....I could never figure out why the original models were red-green and silver...........and then the so-called John Deere model was yellow with white wheels. I bet it was a 'logo' war! They even had an 'accessory' valve that you screwed between hoses and when the tractor reached it, it would bump a lever and turn the water 'off'! ed :disgust:
Horse'n Around 22 #13 Posted June 20, 2011 Ya better watch the movie 'Deliverance' before you go over there.John ........... Kind of scary huh Ed ! I might be gimpy but I can run real fast when I have the proper motivation and that would really motivate me. Id even be able to pass Forrest Gump believe you me :)
