Restoration is underway

First of all I am documenting this restoration as I go, so more pics on the way until completion. So I came across my first major setback. I pulled the k91 from it's perch and after removing all guards I notice that the previous owner had welded the exhaust pipe the motor. I'm guessing that this is unrepairable and a differrent casing will need to be purchased (sucks). The second is the petcock on the gas tank. I'm hoping someone can send me a pick of one as close to original as possible. I was going to get the motor running and the tractor rolling on it's own before restoration, but now I'm going to start the resto while I have it apart. Please any input on the motor whether good or bad will be appreciated. If any one has a parts motor or complete let me know.

im not exactly sure how the exhaust post looks on these, but i think if you have enough meat in the block and if its originally threaded in the port, maybe you could cut the pipe off and grind or remove the rest of the pipe. then you could maybe rethread if the exhaust port will take it. again, not real familiar with this engine, but its worth trying before throwing in the towel on the block.

I don't know much about welding but have removed a few broken pipes. I would definitely try and remove the nipple before giving up on the block.

First I would try to remove the nipple after a liberal soaking with penetrating oil.

Try and grind away all of the weld from the motor and nipple then try to remove it.

If no luck with that, cut the nipple and leave it 3/4" to 1/2" long. Then take a hacksaw blade and cut through the pipe (lengthwise) from the inside in 2-3 places. Try to chisel a piece of the sliced pipe out. Usually you can turn the nipple after a piece is removed. If not keep chiseling the rest of the slices out.

WOW ! , I must say they are about 2 of the ugliest repairs I've ever seen. :)

I agree with Pipes - grind the welds off best as possible, the pipe may come out once the welds are ground off and go from there.

As far as the tank, I think you would be better off looking for a good used one

Good luck with your project :hide:

:WRS: :hide: looks like the chickens got loose. take the gastank to a reputable old time radiator shpo and see if "lead lungs" the old timer can work a miracle by soaking in the cleaning tang and then resoldering the fitting and or patch in place and then coating the inside of the tank with a poly sealer/liner.

the exhaust was probably welded with a nickle alloy rod (relatively soft), I think if it was mine I'd use a thin cut off wheel and cut the pipe off flush with the block and then use a high speed carbide burr in a dremel or die grinder and do some exploratory surgery on the pipe/weld and see how deep the weld penetrates into the block, probably not to far, and then clean out the rest of the pipe&threads and retap with the existing size or 1 size larger pipe tap and install a new pipe nipple and or bushing if necessary. Odds are pretty good that the origonal pipe was loose and vibration wore the threads out and instead of trying to make a proper repair someone used a welder to effect an easy "repair" and their is still enough material in the block to make a proper repair.

I agrre with grinding the weld carefully, you can also use a die grinder carefully to remove the nipple for re-threading.

I found a forum member with some k91's for sale so I should be able to make one good engine from that. O.K. now the gas tank. I removed all the old paint Holy crap the bottom of the tank is thinner than tissue paper and lots of holes. I need to just replace it.
