Kohler Magnum 18hp

Recommended Posts

Stigian

Morning Guy's I'm watching a Kohler Magnum on ebay, the problem is it in in bits!!

Have a look at the link below and let know your feelings on it guys.

Are parts like gaskets easy to get hold of?

I'm having thoughts about a belt driven turbo engine for my 6 wheeled project so maybe this ebay engine is an ideal candidate for a rebuild to turbo spec :hide:

I'd say it is worth the price right now, but does it even turn over? it looks pretty rusty, I know here parts are not to bad to find, price is much better than Onan parts, and I have a 18hp magnum, it is a great engine even with 1000 hours on it.

Thanks for that Kelly :WRS:

The engine turns over so I'm going to have a bid on it.

Just over 2 hours to go, wish me luck Guy's :hide:

Thanks for the offer Chris, I will send you a pm once I've had a good look at the engine just in case it's a bit too far gone to rebuild. I had a look at the ebay photo's again today and noticed one broken off head bolt sticking out of the barrel..

At least there is still part of the bolt to grip on to, so it should come out easy.

I have that same engine lots of power, i have it on my cub puller. Let me know what you need for parts. NAPA auto parts sells all kolher engine parts here in the U.S.

Thanks Chris, the engine hasn't turned up yet (maybe today) so no idea on what parts are needed at the mo, will let you know when I do.

Good to know these engines have loads of power, just what's needed with my rather heavy project :hide:

Good afternoon Guy's, well the engine arrived and... it's a bit of a mixed bag of good and bad....

I'm not quite sure if it's worth rebuilding or not....

Photo time :ROTF:

And thus it arrived..

TSS377.jpg

Que the normal silly photo :P

TSS378.jpg

And there we have it, a Kohler Magnum 18 in kit form :woohoo:

TSS379.jpg

At this point I should of taken lots of photos of lots of engine bits scattered about the place, instead keenness took hold as the engine block/casing got thrown onto the bench for a check over....

Pistons moved in and out which is a good thing.. Trouble is the valves didn't move :D

Better find out why..

The front barrel came off easy..

TSS380.jpg

Looks quite clean in there..

TSS381.jpg

A few of the parts scattered about on the bench.. Better tidy it up before splitting the engine casing.

TSS382.jpg

The casing came apart easier than I was expecting, two bolts gave a few problems but a slightly under size socket sorted them out.

The case was split by winding a few of the bolts back in a bit and gently tapping them with a hammer.. When the tapping sound turned into a hollow "thunk" the case pulled apart.

TSS383.jpg

Can you spot what's missing on this photo?

TSS384.jpg

Lot's of teeth off the camshaft sprocket!!! :D

TSS385.jpg

The sprocket on the crank only has the very slightest of damage to a couple of teeth.

TSS386.jpg

One of the bores looks very good with only the faintest of marks.

TSS387.jpg

The other bore..... Well your going to have to wait a little while, I need to get started on cooking dinner... Roast lamb tonight.. Yummy :D

Ian,

I would say you have a good excuse to order a performance cam for it. You can get one with factory lift and increased duration to give you lots of low end torque.

The other bore is not quite so good with some deep-ish rust pitting..

I'm not sure if it will come out with a quick hone, or is a re-bore needed?

TSS388.jpg

The crank case is as you would expect.. Full of bits of camshaft teeth!!

TSS389.jpg

The con rods feel good with no up and down play on the crank, same for the piston ends.

TSS391.jpg

The piston are good as well :D It only took minimal effort to clean the carbon off them.

Standard size which could be handy, plenty of space for a re-bore should the rust in the barrel need it.

TSS390.jpg

So there you go Guy's, do you think it's worth the parts and the time to rebuild it or should I be looking for a better engine :woohoo:

I think it's well worth rebuilding.

I like your thinking Jim :D Where would I find such a cam?

I think it's well worth rebuilding.

I hope so... Spotted something that has got me a bit worried though..

Is this strange shape and uneven taper normal on these engines :woohoo:

TSS400.jpg

TSS399.jpg

The other slightly annoying thing is the lack of an engine ID number, no sign of it anywhere!!

All I can find is 3884 kinda scratched onto the case..

TSS398.jpg

I was having a glance at the Magnum 20hp engine spec's today and noticed the 18 and 20hp engine have the same bore size, but the 20hp has a larger displacement.

Is the extra displacement down to a crank with a longer throw or different rods, or both even?

I'm just wondering how easy it would be to rebuild this engine to 20hp spec..

Are the carbs the same?

Cheers Guy's :ROTF:

Ian,

Check with one of these people. A lot of times they require your old cam as a core or regrind your old cam so it might not be the cheapest option for you, but you have to pay if you want to play.

Greg Hackman at Seymour small engines has a very good reputation.

Thanks for that Jim :D

Just looking at the Seymour website and a bit confused by all the choice :woohoo:

Which cam would you go for bearing in mind I'm not looking for lot's of hp just a bit more torque.

Done a bit of research and I think the engine spec number is 24524.

Did I mention this engine came out of an Argocat?

to change displacement, if the bore is the same the crank has to have a different stroke, the question is are the rods and pistons the same? the rods could be shorter or the pin holes in the pistons could be closer to the top of the piston.

I think I'd cost compare a different std.size jug to a bore job and new pistons if everything else checks out good.

Ian,

I would shoot Greg Hackman an e mail, tell him what you have and what you're looking for, he'll know what cam profile you want.

Thanks for all the of parts help and advice with this engine Guy's :woohoo:

But this engine is no longer needed for this project as another er.... more complete engine has been found..

I'm not giving you any clues though :ROTF:

Chris - No parts needed this time but don't worry, I'm sure I will need to ask you to send me something at some point :D
