New arrival - D200 Automatic

Recommended Posts

wheeledhorseman

Had a nice day out on the Isle of Wight today and returned with my next :WRS: project.

I'm determined to complete the C-120 auto first though before moving on to anything major work on this one.

The good news is that the engine runs really well with no smoke and the tractor goes forward well :disgust: but reverse doesn't work :hide: . I'll have a look at the linkages tomorrow as it doesn't feel as though the lever movement is quite right somehow.

The rear hydraulic lift works but the centre lift doesn't. The control handle is missing due to the fact that the actuating shaft on the top of the valve assembly it is normally fixed to is broken off at the week point i.e. where it has a hole drilled through it. Any help or advice on these issues welcomed.

The PTO clutch parts came with it in a bag though neither of the previous owners seems to know why they were removed. It does mean that I don't have the v belt to put it all back on so again if someone can tell me the belt size it will help in finding an aftermarket replacement here in the UK. It looks like it should be a half inch belt but how long?

I don't know the exact year but the model number 71-20KS01 comes up on the Toro site as 1977 model. On the data plate the model number is followed on the same line by 5454 and in the box below the number 6319 is marked.

The Kohler is a K532S spec 53015A serial 7563179. My daughter immediately described this tractor as the 'uber' :) (ultimate). I suspect there will be a number of 'uber' challenges ahead with this project but I'm a great believer that most things can be fixed with a bit of help and advice from your friends.

Hi guys, the answer is yes Rex, always assuming that I can sort out the Sundstrand reversing issue then once the tractor has been refurbished it will do some of the heavier work around the place. The tractors all have to work and to that end I fitted the C120 auto with a deck today so that it can go team mowing with the 227-5 and cut our mowing time by half.

I had a flutter on the D-200 the first time round on ebay but was outbid by Chris on the Island and you are right Neil he is a really nice genuine guy.

I was tempted by that too, but I think it would have resulted in divorce!

Good luck with the resto

p.s. I have already drawn a D-200 decal set up :hide:

Nice buy Andy, a D-200 has been on my "'orse wish list" for a long time.

Hope you can sort the reverse problem out easily.

Are you planning a full restoration or just fixing the problem and putting it to work?

Good question Ian. It's in the workshop already :hide: even though I haven't finished the C-120. I got lucky with the first project in that there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the hydro on that one even though someone in the past put ATF in it. Now its a steep learning curve with this one as I've actually got to fix a hydro for the first time. I've read and re-read the Sundstrand service manual and I think I do now actually understand how the transmission works and why there are just three possible culprets for the no reverse fault. I do intend to 'restore' the tractor and I can see it taking take some time though hopefully not the five years that Tony spent on his C-125. When its restored I'll put it to work.

There's a growing list of parts that I'll need to acquire over time and unless I can find a 'scrapper' here in the UK I doubt it will ever be a completely authentic restoration. At the moment just getting it to go backwards would be nice. So far I've eliminated two of the three possible causes so I'm hopefull that the microscopic hole in the metering plug of the reverse acceleration valve being blocked is to blame. The valve was easy enough to remove, dismantling it without damaging the aluminium body is more of a challenge.

I don't think its gone backwards in a very long time. The original vendor on ebay couldn't remember why the pto clutch had been removed - my guess would be that he was handed the bits in the same bag they're still in when he bought the tractor. The reason is that you remove the pto so that you can release the engine from the chassis and slide it forwards in order to remove the hydro pump. The engine has been unbolted at some point but the hydro pump was never removed and in any case as far as I can tell the pump is actually fine.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi Andy!

Nice horse you have there, I just wanted to offer you a lift cylinder if that's what's stopping your lift from working and I believe I have shifting linkages as well. Let me know, cost of postage is all. You will find those beasts take about 1/ acre to turn in!

Hi Gerry

:hide: for your offer to help. Yes it is a beast of a :WRS: , probably what made me want one in the first place. I'll send you a pm with the details of what I need to get the lift going again.

Not sure about the tyre size Vince, I'll check tomorrow. The tread is pretty much worn down and the wheels were turned to the lessen the width of the tractor for transporting it. Both things may create an illusion about the size.

The good news on the hydro front is that I think I have found the fault.

:WRS: The spring between the forward and reverse acceleration valves in the hydro motor has broken. There are four separate parts to it now, two of which have wound themselves together.

:hide: Where can I get a replacement spring? I'm guessing I'll have to get one shipped to the UK from the US.

Got nowhere trying to obtain a spring from hydro rebuild people :woohoo: but a comment I got from one re the fact that proprietory springs are used led to me discovering that, like bearings, compression springs come in standard imperial and metric sizes. Using a mircrometer you measure the diameter of the wire the spring is made from, the OD of the spring, and its length. In metric mine came to 1.14mm x 7.62mm x 50.8mm. The diameter of the wire had to be measured well away from the fractured ends where it was clearly distorted. I put the numbers into the 'search for a spring' on the Spring Masters website and sure enough it's the a standard spring :D . (Spring Masters are a UK spring manufacturer). As one would expect it's actually an imperial spring, 50.8mm = 2 inches. As a double check they give the number of coils to the spring which I checked against the original having sort of pieced it together and the numbers matched :ROTF: . There was a minimum order value so I've ordered 10 as you never know when I might need one for my C-120 or someone else might need one. So progress is being made but I'll have to wait now for them to be delivered.
