Calebintn 1 #1 Posted May 20, 2011 I finally bought this mystery wheel horse. Its mostly original except for seat, steering wheel & decals. It needs the starter/generator rebuilt. I will start restoring her this weekend, hope yall like it.

neil 2,410 #5 Posted May 20, 2011 i have an 856 here in the UK, but its not as nice as yours . Yours looks really nice great little tractor congratulations :hide:
Kelly 1,030 #6 Posted May 20, 2011 Is this the one we tried to figure out what it was?? if it's a 856 it has the wrong drive belt guard, but looks like a good start.
pharmer 0 #7 Posted May 20, 2011 What's different about the belt guard? Just curious after looking at the other 856's on this site.
littleredrider 409 #8 Posted May 20, 2011 looks like it's off a round hood.....
rmaynard 15,788 #9 Posted May 20, 2011 Compared to my 856, I don't see any difference in the guard.
boovuc 1,090 #10 Posted May 20, 2011 I'm with Kelly. It doesn't have the indentation on it like I thought all the 856's had. I'm no expert on them but I think I see what Kelly was seeing. You know......I can't think of one thing that I'm an expert at! It certainly doesn't take anything away from that tractor. Very straight! Excellant pickup! mavfreak 11 #11 Posted May 20, 2011 still looks good to me
Calebintn 1 #12 Posted May 20, 2011 I know the engine is a 66 model, ill post thhe tractor model # to let someone give a positive id
rmaynard 15,788 #13 Posted May 20, 2011 I stand corrected. Didn't notice the lack of indent, but...if it's an 856 or 857, The steering wheel is not correct; The hood decals, front and side are not correct; No hood ornament; Rear hitch is not correct. Also, can't see a cigarette lighter on the dash, but that might just be the lighting. Just my observations. Hope you can find the ID tag which should be on the hood stand, under the dash if it is an 856.
boovuc 1,090 #14 Posted May 20, 2011 I love these machines. Don't take any offense to what we point out. I own a machine, (look at my signature), that started life as a 601 but has an 856 motor and a 1045 belt guard emblem. I'll bet if I post a detailed picture, there are a few more addendums on it from other models our Redsquare members could point out. The fact is your tractor is complete in every detail. It's a very restorable machine or as I do, just use them! That was what they were built for in the first place! BooVuc Mill Hall, PA
Calebintn 1 #15 Posted May 20, 2011 I cant get the tractor to fire while pull starting it, bought a new coil and still no fire. It was said to have been running when parked last year. I cannot find an id tag anywhere on the tractor either. Any suggestions? :hide:
TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #16 Posted May 20, 2011 The ID tag (if still there) will be riveted to the hoodstand, just below the aluminum dash housing. Example:
SNYFIX 13 #17 Posted May 20, 2011 We could be wrong but we think you have more of a 'salad' there. We see a starter/generator Kohler which is down where the battery should be and a mower deck that does'nt look right for the tractor. Now we could be wrong --
pharmer 0 #18 Posted May 20, 2011 You're correct about the deck being different. But hey it's a" Wheel Horse" regardless of what it has on it. Nice looking tractor by the way.
Kelly 1,030 #19 Posted May 20, 2011 I was not trying to talk bad about your tractor, just pointing out IF it's a 856 it should have the indent on the belt guard, in 67 they don't have the indent or later short frames, the model no. was on the side of the hood, the hood ornament is probably just missing, as for pull starting it, did you put a batt. in it?? it has batt. ign. and will not fire make sure the key is on and you have power to the coil. TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #20 Posted May 20, 2011 I wouldn't say that an 857 can't have the indent on the belt guard: ^ the one I had was repainted, but didn't appear to have been tampered with much - except for the addition of a "beep-beep" horn mounted to the front belt guard bolt, and an ugly utility light mounted cyclops-style to the end of the hood. (which is why there is no hood ornament visible in the picture)
Kelly 1,030 #21 Posted May 20, 2011 Ok you got me on that one, but the 3 I've had all had the flat guard.
TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #22 Posted May 20, 2011 It's no longer here, so I can't check the numbers....... but I suspect mine was an early-production model. As some of us know, it wouldn't be out of the question for to use up leftover 1966 belt guards. :hide:
Calebintn 1 #23 Posted May 21, 2011 I got the tractor running, and she purrs like a kitten. There are holes where an id tag should have been so I cant get the model #. Ill tell the story behind this tractor my best friends grand father bought it new and used until he passed it on to his son who sent it somewhere to be "redone" where it got new paint, steering wheel, decals, and seat. The hood ornament is missing but the holes are there. I know the engine is a 66 model so maybe when it was "redone" the belt guard was changed I really dont know. I am tickled to have a wheel horse as they are hard to find in my area. I plan to restore this one to good working order so if you have any parts I may need that you want to sell let me know. Tommorrow I am going to rewire it and change all the fluids. Oh yeah the dash is just like the one pictured above except the cigarett lighter has been removed and wire cut and the dash was painted black.
cletus 0 #24 Posted May 21, 2011 that mower deck looks very much like the one i have on a jacobsen chief 1000 i have, if memory serves me correctly :hide:
littleredrider 409 #25 Posted May 21, 2011 Mower deck looks to be off an early 60s round hood....
