C-100 Facelift

My newest addition, the C-100 from last Fridays adventure, is getting a makeover! :wh: ...Wish I'd known that before I rewired it last weekend.

Thanks to me being on the road for a couple days & my kids finding the extra garage door opener, I have what appears to be a "chop shop" operating from my house. :wh:

They thought it would be cool to repaint the 100 since somebody did it years ago with a paint that caused the original WH paint to peel & flake off.

Apparently, they're learning faster than I gave them credit for. They could've just brushed & sprayed everything they could reach to make it prettier, but following my lessons on restores, stripped it to a pile of parts. :D ...Guess I won't be using this one to clean up the yard & trails through the woods this weekend. :thumbs:

Stay tuned... Could get interesting! Since they started it, they're going to finish it! Against my better judgement, I'm letting them decide a paint scheme since they're the ones that will be using it. So this one won't be :D red, more likely Camo or OD green. They're currently obsessed with "Call of Duty" on the PS3, so everything is military with them right now. :D

I'll still be working on the 400, but I'll take pics and update both projects as I have time.

You're taking this very well, Dad. Think about how much they already learned from you to be able to disassemble a whole tractor, and how much more they will learn in the process of restoring it. Valuable time spent for all of you. :thumbs:

OK, Kelly... Here's the pics of what I came home to yesterday. I've got c-100 all over my 400 :thumbs: ...And I guessed correctly, Black & Olive Drab are the colors. I got to see some of the engine tins tonight. Not too bad! Pics of those tomorrow. I'm impressed so far. At 9 & 12, I just took things apart...no interest in putting them back together.

Not too bad for kids with rattle cans! :WRS: The oldest (12) is stripping & painting.

I was nosing around the project when I got home yesterday & noticed my engine is NOT a 10hp...

Someone put a 12hp in there & installed the original 10hp tins. Not sure why, but this fits my motto of bigger-faster-stronger! :)

Also, I was looking at the rolling frame & noticed my front spindles are different :hide:

The right side is a normal 3/4" spindle & the left side is a 3/4" offset/reinforced spindle. I have no idea what that came off of, but I'll get pics of that today.

This project is becoming interesting...

What I thought was a K241... Then thought was a K301... Curious, I pulled the head real quick I actually have a K301 block and piston with a K241 crank & rod :hide:

And I think it's junk. :)

The bore should be 3.3750". It's 3.444". :disgust:

The stroke should be 3.2500". It's 2.8750". Which is the K241 stroke.

3.3750" is stock

3.4050" is .030" over bored

3.4085" is max allowable wear.

Mine is .0355" over max. ...Not sure how it still ran :WRS: I'm going to pull it all apart & see what's inside tonight (after Mother's day events)

Jay,

I've gotta say, after following your adventure with the exploding coil, and now this, your kids are starting to scare me! :)

On the other hand, it seems like they do have some of Dad's talent, and maybe even some design skills to go along with it. This could get REALLY interesting, can't wait to see how this story develops! :hide:

Your K241/K301 observations reminded me of something. The other day, after 24 years of owning my 310-8, I noticed that my K241 is clearly marked "K301" on the right side of the block, just above the PTO clutch/pulley area. I can't imagine why I never noticed that before -- the engine's original, although it has been rebuilt twice, so I suppose anything's possible. Any idea what it could mean? :WRS:

OK...

Finally home from an unexpected & very long week out of town for work. ...Just love last minute trips!

Now that work is out of my life for a few days, it's back to the garage to see how many ways I can upset the wife this weekend :WRS:

Tomorrow morning I'm picking up the # of the PO before the PO I got it from. I have some assumptions about this :hide: 's past life, but I want to confirm some details before I continue tearing assemblies apart.

As far as other questions...

YES, I have 2 blasting cabinets, and a larger portable blaster rig.

NO, the kids can't use any of them. ...Still too young. They're using old fashioned elbow grease, sand paper, & wire brushes. ...Same way my Dad made me at that age.

THANKS, for the compliments on their work so far! They're great kids & have the same curiosities I did at their age. This isn't the first project they've done, but it's the first solo one. They've been my shadows in the garage since they could walk. The 12yr old actually rebuilt the carb on my B-80 the last time by himself only using the manual for reference.

I'm impressed with the quality of their paint finish. They're using some generic XO-Rust gloss paint-primer from True Value that's about 4yrs old. Black & Reed are the official color names for anyone interested. I had them left over from a camo duck boat project.

Going to bed so I can hit the garage with coffee at sunrise! ...supposed to be 40 degrees in the AM

There is nothing like kids in the shop with Dad watching whats going on and helping out when they can. Me and my son built a bigger grader box for the d160 about a week ago, about an hour and half into the project he had my spare hood on watching me weld. By a third of the way though the weld out he was burning rods on one end, I was on the other. Never under estimate the mind of an 11 yr old, or any child for that matter. He is now dead set, Dad's getting a bigger tractor and he's keeping that Horse.
