LuckyJohn 0 #1 Posted May 2, 2011 Where to get it, and what should I use? I am going to fix up a 312 for my dad to use at his house, I am not making this a show piece but something he can use to till the garden and roll the yard with. I am going to have the metal sand blasted and I will shoot primer on it, but were is the best place to get the paint and do I just ask for Wheel Horse red? mowerman1193 40 #2 Posted May 2, 2011 If I was just building a work tractor I would probably just go to TSC store and buy the restoration series paint in the international red which is almost an identical match..But on a show tractor I use automotive paint Dupont base coat clear. Forest Road 594 #6 Posted May 4, 2011 Do you need to sand blast it? I just finished my 312-8. I used a paint stripper and was done in minutes. Some sanding on the rust and good enough for a worker.
HankB 16 #7 Posted May 4, 2011 I used a paint stripper and was done in minutes. What kind of paint stripper? thanks, hank
Forest Road 594 #8 Posted May 4, 2011 I used a paint stripper and was done in minutes. What kind of paint stripper? thanks, hank Zinnser power stripper. Or any off the shelf stripper @ your local hardware store. Let stand 10 minutes and strip. Had to reapply a couple times but I was done in record time! It was too easy!!!!! I also tried an organic stripper. Let stand for 24 hours and then try. Don't know about anyone else here but who has time for that? And I used Rustoleum Tractor IH RED rattle cans. Looks good from here.
tbbahner 27 #9 Posted May 4, 2011 I have found that Super Strip by Savogran works better than most of the hardware store stuff I tried. Most of them work about as well as me taking a leak on the metal. Paint is a matter of preference. I've used IH red from Valspar and Van Sickle from TSC and Orschlien but will be going to New Holland red. Another member - Bowtie Guy, led me to it, doesn't look quite as orange. Just my opinion. Have fun with it and use what you want. Tom B

546cowboy 301 #12 Posted May 5, 2011 I get the aircraft stripper from AutoZone and it's about $30 a gallon but it does a great job at getting the paint off. That's cheaper than buying sandpaper and spending hours and hours trying to get the paint smooth enough. I use the Van Sickle Case/IH red with the hardener and a spray gun and it shines really nice. I believe the last Van Sickle I bought was about $12 a quart or $25 a gallon and the hardener is about $25 for the larger can. I haven't tried that Valspar restoration paint. As long as I get the results I want from the Van Sickle I won't be changing either. I have used some of that Valspar and if you don't use the hardener it never seems to dry. When I first started painting tractors for a friend of mine ( farm tractors ) I used the Valspar from TSC but it always faded pretty bad within a year or so. As I recall though at that time they didn't sell that restoration paint. Just some observations from my own experience.
