redidbull 54 #1 Posted April 30, 2011 Hi I am new to this so please bear with me. I need to fix the spring on my 73 tractor. I have an auto and the foot pedal needs to be up to put in gear and then push to brake. I had read somewhere it is under the shift plate but I didn't have any luck. Thanks for any help. daveoman1966 3,762 #3 Posted May 1, 2011 There is a rather feeble and tiny brake return spring under the shift plate cover and it is pretty tuff to get at... especially with old-guy fat fingers. Here is a fairly easy solution and it put the return spring on the outside of the hoodstand. Much stronger spring too...therefore more positive. Use a 1/8" drill bit to put a hole in the soft steel rod, away from the hyd lines. Stick a cotter pin fully into the drilled hole and bend the tabs over. Then, just hook a utility spring into the eye of the cotter pin and hook the other end of it to the hoodstand under the seat somewhere. Cut spring length as needed.
