stevasaurus 22,711 #1 Posted April 15, 2011 There has been a lot of transmissions going bad lately, and a lot of new guys with them, so I decided to help with a video of putting one together. I think the only difference between the 3 speed and the 4 speed uni-drives, is that the brake shaft comes out of a different hole in the trans case. The bearings are the same, it is just that one of the cap and one of the through bears have switched places. I have laid out and labeled all of the parts. The first video builds the differential. And because my batteries died, the 2nd video builds the trans. In the video, I wrongly said the bolts go up when placing the differential at the end...the nuts must be up in order for the differential not to interfere with the 11T-44T gear. There is more to this video stuff then I thought, but I hope it shows how really easy it is to put one of these transmissions together. Hope you enjoy, and I hope it helps our fellow horse lovers. Click on these last 2 pictures for the videos. 6

Horse'n Around 22 #11 Posted April 15, 2011 Steve, thank you for taking the time to do this. Im going to make sure to save the whole thing because I know its going to come in handy. I am curious, does a 6 or 8 sp trans go together the same way for the most part? I have a damaged 6 speed that came out of my '70 Raider 10 that Im collecting parts for thats going to need my attention in a big way. Thanks Steve! stevasaurus 22,711 #14 Posted April 16, 2011 I am curious, does a 6 or 8 sp trans go together the same way for the most part? John John...yes the 6 and 8 speeds go together exactly the same way...in fact...they use the same gears. The only difference is the shallow side of the case has been milled out under where the shift forks go to make room for the Hi/Low shifter assembly. There are some great pictures of that in the Useful Post section. After putting in the Hi/Low stuff, the transmissions are the same. Hey guys...thanks for all the great comments...I really appreciate them. :wh:

Photos are very useful, and there's lots of good ones on this site, but there's nothing like a good video to really experience and understand the process. I'll be watching yours again when it comes time to rebuild my own 8-speed. :wh:

AMC RULES 37,130 #22 Posted February 22, 2012 Thanks once again Steve, for the great how to tutorial. Can we get this moved to the technical section of the FAQ and Mechanical Tips, or at least pinned at the top of the trans thread so it's easier to find in the future? :thanks:
