Horse Corn Planter

Recommended Posts

I picked up one of these little Earthway seeders last year and it worked so well it got me thinking how nice of a setup this might be behind the Wheel Horse. We put out a few acres of sweet corn last year using this seeder as a walk behind; This year, i plan to be riding if all goes well.

Last night I started fabricating a frame, and this was what i came up with. I saw a similar one mounted to a 3point Deer tractor, and thought this set up would work for the Horse and the slot hitch as well. I'm planning to use the attach o matic the mower bar hooks to for a quick attach row marker with short pieces of chain dragging to keep my row spacing. I have it all tacked up now, so after i make sure it tracks straight i'll finish the welding this evening.

I really need to come up with a way to inject fertilizer as well. Any ideas?? I was possibly thinking a 2gal plastic gas can mounted upside down with some pvc plummed down to the seed drop tube. Any ideas???

Nice work. How do those work? Do they drop the seed at a preset interval? If so maybe you could rig it trip the fertilizer at the same time.

Well, I haven't tried it behind the tractor yet, so i can't speak to that as of yet. Last year i used this seeder to plant everything from corn to lettuce and i have to say i was pleasantly surprised. It has about half a dozen seed plates that come with it so it can plant just about anything. It does have a few quirks, but for the most part i was happy with it. I believe i paid around $90bucks for the seeder last year through Northern Tools.

I don't know how these will hold up in the long run, ( plastic gears, wheels ect), but for the price it sure has saved me tons of time. What usually takes a few hrs is reduced to a few mins with the seeder.

That little black thing in the center that looks like an inverted cheap funnel is the seed hopper. I do have to admit that it looks pretty whimpy compared to the rest of the outfit.

I too started thinking of mounting 2 or 3 together as well, but i believe i'll look for a 2 row planter down the road i can hook to the 3point hitch tractor when i find one. I think even my dog silently chuckled as i rolled this unit out of the garage this evening.

Until then, i'll see how this works in the next few weeks. The hopper only lets me go a few rows, and then i have to stop and refill them. But hey...if it works, it sure beats pushing!
